I almost bought a gargoyle of my own once. I spotted it in that really cool and quirky antique store on E. Carson near 12th, but the lady clerk working that day wouldn't sell it to me as it had no price tag. So I returned a few days later when she told me the owner would be there and I could speak to him about purchasing it, I borrowed a buddy's pickup truck and everything. So, I finally tracked down the owner of the store and he told me it wasn't for sale! WTF!?!?! WTF I say!?!?! Why have it on display on the floor of your store if it's not for sale? Anyway, he's a really cool guy and gave me the whole background of the gargoyle, apparently it used to sit atop one of the older midrises downtown that was demolished to make way for one of the more modern skyscrapers.

Oh, and great photos, as always

I almost posted a pic of my house for you, then I couldn't bring myself to do it. It's within blocks of the firehouse though, although that doesn't narrow it down much.

No... the deer were in someone's yard on the edge of massive and heavily wooded Riverview Park. This was 5 miles north of Downtown... within city limits, however.

Great tour, and great images. I love the hills and the homes that hug them, so many trees and interesting residential architecture + building typologies.

I went for a walk the other day and went down this street for the first time. It's pretty sad how many abandoned houses there are (and even an abandoned school). Then, if you walk up the steps to Waldorf St., it's not only like a different neighborhood, it looks like a different city. Mansions with manicured lawns literally feet from this building.

Observatory Hill is amazing!

I moved to Observatory Hill from the South Side of Pittsburgh. It was the best decision I've made. Observatory Hill is a unique blend of forest and city. It has insane views that have wooded hillsides, an observatory building, homes clinging to hills and the skyscrapers of downtown all in one view. From where I live (which is .1 Mile from the hight point in the city) I can see the Chestnut Ridge on a clear day, down the Ohio River valley and countless homes and ridges. It is a really special place that seems to be catching on. I am so happy to see dozens of rehabs throughout the network of streets that comprise Observatory Hill. There is also a band of residents who started a social/community/networking group (OHNO - Observatory Hill North) that meets for clean ups and happy hours. My kind of crowd. http://observatoryhillnorth.blogspot.com/

The East End is great, but with the current momentum in Observatory Hill, I think this will be a neighborhood on the rise worth investing in.
