Re thread title, might sound a bit bombastic but I think it's an apt description of the harbour city.
Population: 4.5 million
History: Founded 1788 as a prison colony, grew rapidly with the gold rush, ending the 19th century with 500k people.
All my own pictures, Sydney's downtown.
Wow it really does share a resemblance with New York. Spectacular photo tour. Definitely a must-see for me in the future. Considering that Sydney is more than a century younger than New York, it has some room to catch up
Love Sydney. Had a wonderful visit in 2003. The city reminds me more of San Francisco and Vancouver than of New York City.

These streets were not designed for cars, but for horses in a small colonial city! In a city of this size, they get crowded.
Also, the city loves taxis, Sydney has a fleet of 6000 cabs which is half as many as New York! Which is a lot to fit in it's smaller downtown.
Also note all the flags, Australians are as patriotic as Americans heh.

It's rapidly growing, it's forecast to reach 6 million in 2036 and 7.5million in 2050.
There's the new Barangaroo project to expand the city in the west, but more will be needed before the decade is out.
Here's the renders, to be finished by around 2015:
