I couldn't go to Walmart on Sunday Morning

this is a thread about winnipeg.

Welcome!

You can just walk in and, like, do whatever, and stuff.

The first few days were pretty grey. I thought of calling this photo thread "One Grey City". But the weather cleared up the next day.

A bit of the North End for you. At one point we sat down on the sidewalk, pulled out a laptop and "borrowed" someone's WiFi. No one was murdered.

I kind of like Fred Douglas Place. It's the curved windows, I think.

Winnipeg's traffic lights look just like Thunder Bay's traffic lights. I found this oddly comforting. In many places, being in Winnipeg felt more like being in a new part of my own city than actually being in another city.

Technically I still haven't seen a real skyscraper. If you take the underground at Portage and Main, watch out so that you don't bump your head on the poop tube.

Guess which one is the police station!

It's pretty big, but Thunder Bay has a bigger one.

I'm related to him so I have permission to say, "that is the creepiest statue of Louis Riel I have ever seen."

They put urinal cakes or something in the fountains here. It's weird but it turns the water a pretty shade of blue.

Wow, we went from one end of downtown to the other in only six photos! This must be a record?

Guys, there are, like, a lot of warehouses in Winnipeg. There's like a whole district of them or something. Like, a "warehouse district".

We got kicked out of the museum.

Western Canada's first post office, and other North Point Douglas attractions.

They're just friends, guys. No homo.

When I was taking the last photo some guys in a pickup truck yelled "faggot" at me as they drove by.

The End.

So anyway, I went to Winnipeg back in June (the 9th to the 16th), and have only just now gotten around to actually posting photos from the trip. I finished putting them all on Flickr four weeks ago, but it's just been really busy at work and I haven't found the time and I'm lazy and other excuses.

I'm going back to Winnipeg from September 14 to 22 so I'm actually closer to my next trip than my last one. I'll probably have the photo thread for that trip up by Christmas or something.

You can view all 272 of my Winnipeg photos on my Flickr page!
To satisfy Flickr's TOS, I have to inform you that all of the photos in this thread are hosted by Flickr.

good stuff vid, sorry to hear some dumbasses drove by in a truck

hope when you're back in Winnipeg you explore more and take some more pics....some excellent shots. The one over Disraeli Bridge is something not often seen.

Awesome. Has that European feel many Canadian cities have mimicked successfully.

Thanks for the long awaited pics! Winnipeg definitely looks a lot nicer than I was expecting. Looks almost Australian!

Ok.

Firstly, why couldn't you go to Wal-Mart on Sunday morning?

Secondly, why did you get kicked out of the museum?

I miss Winnipeg, used to live there. Anyway, I could see the parallels with Thunder Bay. Yep, why would you want to go to Walmart when you have a city like that? Great, comprehensive thread, thank you!

Nice photos, vid. And I think those people are full of it when they say there's a dangerous dog guarding their front door. That cat doesn't seem worried about it.

I was wondering when we'd see this. You've exceeded my expectations (and they weren't even low!). I figured you'd be one to make Winnipeg look good.

Unlike Ontario, Manitoba still has restrictions on Sunday shopping. While Walmart in Thunder Bay opens at 7am on Sunday, it doesn't open until noon in Winnipeg. I didn't even see a Walmart while I was there, but if I had referred to Chapters, only Canadians would have known what I meant.

When I was a kid, it was illegal for large stores to open on Sunday at all. When we removed that law in the 1990s, there was great fanfare. These days in Ontario, large stores don't even close on most holidays. I actually found that a lot of businesses in Winnipeg had shorter hours than similar businesses in Thunder Bay and thought that was kind of odd considering Winnipeg is 7 times larger.

We don't hate you Vid! We're just so awestruck by the photos that we can't think of anything to say.

Seriously, it's an excellent photo set! Great compositions, and the grey skies worked well with the muted colors in some places -- concrete, limestone, rusty iron ...

Looks like an attractive city, and that capitol building at the beginning is an understated beauty.

Thanks for the photo thread, the pictures are amazing! Winnipeg is blessed with a great collection of new and old buildings and none more stunning than the legislative bldg.
Cheers!

Awesome pics, Vid! You make us 'Peggers proud with this album!

Also, just an update on the Sunday hours in Manitoba, as of August 1st, 2012, the hours changed to 9 AM to 6 PM on Sundays.

Still, we have the most restrictive shopping hours in Canada.
