It's very different from Midtown which seems far more manicured.

Great tour!

This town needs to do a few jumping jacks, though.

Awesome shots! This is the best Atlanta I have ever seen. I cannot believe you took all those pictures in 1 hour...

Since when do people on this site think they have the right to tell the the photographer who he or she needs to be taking photos of anyway??? Some stupid comments on here, seriously.

This was a great thread - I'm totally surprised ATL even had an area like that. Where exactly was this place in relation to Downtown?

It's pretty much the center of Downtown, at the intersection of four different streets (Peachtree, Edgewood, Marietta, and Decatur).

Well, considering most of the buildings in Midtown were built in the last 20 years I guess you can say that.

No. It's more like downtown is more dilapidated than Midtown and seems to have more homeless people and cheap stores. It's not that it's older that makes it worse. Older can be better.

Older can be better but in the case of Downtown it's primarily where people work, not live. One also has to consider that Midtown has both residential and commercial space, whereas with Downtown it's primarily just commercial. So yes the stores are cheaper and more dilapidated because it isn't home to a large affluent population. Whereas Midtown is home to a lot of young professionals, the stores reflect this. So I guess it can be said Midtown looks better because it's more affluent.

Great Pics

I swear, I see this guy every time I have to go to the Sam Nunn Federal building. He usually sits in the door way of the abandoned building across the street and yells at people.

That area is the center of our city and it is not welcoming to many... especially with all the bums, crackheads, and homeless. I can only hope Midtown continues to grow and continue to be a place where ALL are welcome, not just one type of people.

I don't think Atlanta caters to one type of race, and everybody is welcome to live in Atlanta. It just happens to be that Atlanta through history is a black mecca. And Atlanta is one of the few predominantly black succesful cities in the United States, which attracts more blacks to live there and be succesful.

Most whites are not eager to relocate or move to a predominantly black neighbourhood anyway. It has to do more with mentality and being a prejudice. Even so the number of African Americans living in the city of Atlanta has decreased in the last years while the number of whites and latinos have increased in that same period.

Great pictures by the way!

Wow, that's really interesting. There's a lot of style in this thread...one of my family members is moving there in September so I'll be visiting semi-frequently...can't wait.

WOW! I missed this thread. Wish I knew what 5 Points offered before my Atlanta visit. This looks like it's in the Georgia State campus part of town.

Up until the 1990s and prior to the onslaught of bank mergers, Five Points was headquarters to several major Southeast banks and the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. The only major bank headquarters that remain in the area is SunTrust.

With the expansion of Georgia State into Five Points and the loss of bank headquarters (including the Federal Reserve Bank which is now in Midtown Atlanta), the Five Points area now includes more students and government workers than in the recent past. Five Points MARTA station (the major transfer station in the system) is in the area so a lot MARTA passengers are present in the area as well.

I agree Stratosphere. Its very peculiar to hear someone say a city especially a southern city only caters to a specific race of people when in fact history and a combination of other factors you mentioned (fear, ignorance, mentality, prejudice, pride, racism, etc.) ultimately determines the type of people and/or the lack of people that would dominate/migrate to a certain area of a city.
