I don't care if times square is too crowded. What's so bad about being too crowded? You just bump shoulders with a lot of other people who are enjoying the retail, entertainment and visual services that times square provides.

Why does DeBlasio want to get rid of the pedestrian plazas and reinstate roads? The only reason to do that is if the vehicular traffic is too clogged but New York started relying on subways a long time ago. New York is already unfriendly to cars.

I will say though that I have no problem with moving the street performers to 7th street, that's a perfectly good location in times square to center the street performers.

Construction has really narrowed the street. Traffic fun one could say.

Compared to the second shot in post #113.

Is there a way to screen out douchebags from Times Square? Problem solved.

What are they doing on the Forever 21 side of the street? That's not supposed to be pedestrianized [to that width], is it?

I'm thinking possibly fixing up the street and upgrading it. The sidewalk is finished. They have been working from the South to the North. The upper Northern section was rushed two years ago due to New Years, but slowly, they have quarantine certain sections while they work. Very slow progress.

I was about to post the exact same thing.

TS is what it is. It's a tourist containment area. It serves its purpose, and is fairly easily avoidable. Everyone should see it once, and probably never again.

Count me in as another NYer that loves Times Sq as well. I love the feeling of being on a completely different planet in a sci-fi flick. It gives me a rush. Obviously if I'm in a rush I wouldn't walk through there.

I also really like (and have been to) Shibuya , Shinjuku, and Piccadilly but none gives me the same level of rush as Times Square.

I think the same way. The way I operate is that the more noise there is, the happier and more focused I get. When I was in University, I use to go to NYC to study, and not in a library, but in crowded places (one of those people who can focus in high activity areas). A favorite of mine was right outside the Apple Store on one of those tables outside. I just like the chaotic nature of it all. Also a good spot was J&R when it was open. Free WiFi, and plenty of sitting room.

Shibuya gave me a rush like no place else...even more than runner up Shinjuku.

I hate the pepsi logo.

well, doing the barnes walk is pretty fun. it used to be more common and people have forgotten about it. we should bring it back in use. otherwise, shinjuku is closer to times sq with the signage.

i'm sure tokyoites shrug a bit in times sq, at least at night, and los vegasans too for that matter, having the strip and old fremont. so there are two cities where the residents may not be quite as impressed as evryone else with their first times sq experience, so what? thats not too shabby. there is nothing like times sq.

Shibuya was impressive to me mostly because it is more multi-dimensional, creeping into many more side streets than Times sq. But I think a Tokyoite would still be impressed because of the scale in TS. First of all when you're standing on the TKTS steps looking south, the canyon effect is out of this world (looking down Broadway and 7th ave). Then the sheer size and scale of the many LCD screens that are intimately enveloping you is something not replicated in Shibuya or Shinjuku. It's just bonkers.

Put it this way, for me personally, I was really impressed with how large Shibuya and Shinjuku districts were (not to mention the many other neon districts in Tokyo), but there was no singular area within any of those that was as impressive, breathtaking, and imposing as Time sq.

One lane is open due to construction. As you can imagine, Labor Day weekend, chaos. Seemed pleasant a few days ago when two lanes where open.

I just feel bad for the guy whose dying because the ambulance is stuck in gridlock.

If I were an ambulance, I would avoid Times Square.
