Take away the LCBO, and you got Canada. Man do we have a lot of cookie cutter stores in this country.

No Sobeys up here. We've got Superstore, A&P and Safeway. That's it. Another dozen local grocers too.

We're chainless.

Yes and No. Sobey's bought the Oshawa Group that had stores named IGA in parts of the country. Many have been converted over to Sobey's. However, there are Freshmarket IGA's in BC that are not owned by Sobey's.

Weird, all our IGAs were bought by Atlantic Superstore, which is owned by Loblaw's.

Interesting to see Sobey's has expanded so far. Empire Theatres, which is also owned by the Sobey family, bought a bunch of theatres nationally too in 2004. They now have a monopoly on the cineplex trade here in Halifax. I miss Famous Players, they had free popcorn seasoning, and the theatre lobbies weren't as obnoxiously loud.

BlackRedGold, I sort of agree, a lot of their (Sobey's) stuff is stale.

Also Halifax is missing the Wal-Mart "Supercentre", but I've heard rumours it's in the post...

That's because Sobey's was forced to sell off the Atlantic IGA stores out of competition concerns.

The same thing happened in Ottawa when Loblaws bought Provigo. They had to sell off the Loeb chain since they'd control over 90% of the supermarkets in Ottawa otherwise.

^LowBlows is what my friends and I used to call them in Ottawa. I remember shopping at the little tiny Reeves IGA in Regina when I lived downtown there. I always liked shopping at the IGA on Bank Street in downtown Ottawa too. Good memories, this grocery store talk. Of course, the real place to grab that snack is:

Its sad that there are so many big box stores in Ontario now but I guess thats just the way it is done now everywhere. I wish they would change up the design of some of the stores at least, everything just looks identical no matter where you go.

Nikon D50 with a tripod. A few are without a tripod using ISO 800.

Good. Swiss Chalet has this thing called "Quarter Chicken". It's 25% of a chicken. (Which 25% it is depends on how much the server hates you.) It's is half cooked and served with "meat" and "vegetables".

You should stay away from Swiss Chalet.

There's one at Pottery Road and Broadview, although it's on the other side, so maybe it's more appropriate to say Mortimer and Broadview. Other than that, they're a dime a dozen on the outskirts of the city.

Edit: Actually a yellowpages search reveals that there are 8 Sobeys in the city, if you count the Sobeys Express locations.

http://www.yellowpages.ca/search/?st...oronto&x=0&y=0

Honestly, Sobeys, Dominion and Loblaws are pretty much identical. They carry mostly the same products and all three are overpriced.
