NEW YORK – skylines from skyscrapers and ground level

This thread is about pictures of New York’s skyline that I took during my visit in August 2011. Let’s begin with the view from Empire State Building:

http://www.worldtravelimages.net/New...yline_ESB.html

I visited Empire State Building in the late evening on Monday 22nd, the day after the small earthquake. The observation deck features 360 degrees views of New York. I also visited ESB in March 1998, also in the evening (on St Patrick's day, also on the evening, the top was green because of that). But it was a bit different now since when I looked to the south, I could see that World Trade Center was gone and was replaced by the new WTC under construciton. And when looking to the North, 2 new buildings have been added to the skyline, both with illuminated neon spires that changes color constantly; Bank of America Tower and Conde Nast Building. From now on Empire State Bldg will be called ESB.

To reach ESB:s observation deck on the 86th floor, we had to pass through 5 lines, take 2 different elevators, totally over one hour of queing and that was in the late evening! In my opinion it is more price worthy to see Top of the Rock, the observation deck at Rockefeller Center's GE Bldg, since the lines are much shorter, the fee is cheaper, it is closer to the Midtown skyscrapers and Central Park and you can actually see ESB from the observation deck. But after all, I think both observation decks are a must then you are in NYC! I chosed to visit Top of the Rock at daytime, and ESB after dark.

When looking to the North, 2 new buildings have been added to the skyline, both with illuminated neon spires that changes color constantly and have been built to compensate for the demolished radio transmitter on the destroyed WTC; Bank of America Tower and Conde Nast Building (middle). To the right you can see the illuminated GE Building, whose observation deck we visited daytime, and New York Times Tower to the left. The skyscraper with the pyramid shaped top is called One Worldwide Plaza and is situated immediately next to Times Square (note the neon lights). To the far left is New Jersey.

Note that the spires of Bank of America Tower and Conde Nast Building have different colours here! They are located betweedn Bryant Park (the illuminated greenery) and Times Square (left).

There is an annoying fenceon the observation deck that makes photographing a bit hard and explain that some of the pictures got a bit blurry (because you can't place a tripod and just zoom).

Here the 2 spires have changed color a 3rd time! The illuminated skyscraper o the far right is Citigroup Center.

Citigroup Center, Chrysler Bldg and Brooklyn can be seen to the right.

Chrysler Building, its nave looking spire is also illuminated after dark.

Times Square with all the neon lights.

The spire was blue this night. It is illuminated in different colours each night.

The top of Empire State Bldg looks different every night. The night we visited it was white, orange and blue (the mast). When I visited in 1998 it was St Patrick's day, and the top was green because of that!

Macy's, the world's largest store, doesn't look so large from the top of ESB!

TO THE NORTH:

Towards South Manhattan in the distance, the Financial District and the new World Trade Center under construction! Statue of Liberty to the far right.Madison Square Park skycrapers in the foreground.

The new WTC, Lower Manhattan. Sorry about the blurry quality, it is hard to position the camera straight because of the fence!

Madison Square Park: NY Life Bldg with its illuminated golden spire and the historic Metropolitan Life Tower with its white illuminated top. The modern thin building to the right is One Madison Park.

Looking down to 5th Ave! The cars look like miniatures.

The observation deck was crowded, especially with Scandinavians! Here you can here people speak Swedish and Norwegian more then anywhere else in NY.

Empire State Bldg from below.

When visitin ESB, you will see the magnificent Art Deco marble lobby with decorations reminding of Empire State Bldg.

This nice model of ESB is standing in the lobby.

The entrance to ESB.

The views from GE Building:

This part is about the visit to GE Building, the tallest building in Rockefeller Center, and its observation deck on the roof, Top of the Rock. On the roof there is an outdoor observation deck that is called Top of the Rock. There are 3 different floors on Top of the Rock that all offer 360 degree views of New York and is designed to look like the top of a ship. The highest is 70 floors up in the sky. The elevator that takes you to the observation deck is really special; at first it looke like a normal elevator with white light on the roof, but suddenly it turns dark and you can see right up the elevator shaft almost 260 m up while the elevator is moving! There is also a special holographic text with the letters "Rockefeller Center" that is moving.

GE Building is the tallest and most famous building in Rockefeller Center. The art deco building was completed in 1933 and has 70 floors. It is 260m tall and was called RCA Building until 1988. On the top there is an observation deck called Top of the Rock, that was closed in 1986 and reopened in 2005.

To read more about and watch photos form the exterior of GE Building, visit my Rockefeller Center page: http://www.worldtravelimages.net/New...ckefeller.html

And here you can find the skyline photos: http://www.worldtravelimages.net/New...kyline_GE.html

Awesome. This is actually the skyline of Queens West in the background, not Brooklyn, but you are seeing both boroughs in the photo.

Its funny how observation decks are generally considered "tourist stuff" that a serious traveler would NEVER do... unless of course you are an urban geek and sucker for these kinds of views like me, in which case observation decks are ALWAYS on the must see list! Amazing shots!

Yes, I agree, it is not touristy at all to look at urban views! But unfortunately these observation decks are filled with tourists that are there just before they "have to" without any genuine interest for urban landscape or tall buildings.

The Staten Island Ferry and its views

Staten Island Ferry, inaugurated in 1905, is a ferry service that takes commuters and tourists from Lower Manhattan to Staten Island, one of New York's 5 boroughs. 8 ferries are currently operating the rote. It is free and offers very nice views of Lower Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn, Jersey City and Midtown Manhattan. Due to the weather the photos didn't become as good as I expected. I was there in 1998 too, when the old WTC was visible from the ferry, but it was foggy and cloudy then so I wanted to go back this sunny day. But things didn't turn out as expected. It was sunny, very hot and humid as we were waiting for the ferry. But immediately when we boarded the ferry we heard a thunder, huge clouds where approaching very fast and it started to rain a lot just after the boat started to move!

In 2005 the Manhattan terminal was completely renovated and modernized. It is located near Battery Park on southernmost Manhattan.

Entering the ferry "Spirit of America".

Liberty Island (left) with the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island (right), the gateway to America for immigrants between 1892-1954, now the Immigration Museum.

Lower Manhattan skyline, will in the near future once again be dominated by World Trade Center.

The weather changed very fast!

The Statue of Liberty. In rain.

The Statue of Liberty, officially called Liberty Enlightening the World, is a world famous neo classical statue standing on a pedestal on the small Liberty Island. It was designed by Frédéric Bartholid and dedicated in 1886. It represent Libertas, the Roman godess of freedom, and was a gift from France. The torch is lit after dark.It is The statue is 46m high. The observation deck in the crown has been occasionally closed after 9/11. It is sometimes open, but it is not clear then. The reason for that is to prevent terror attacks! A stairway leads to the torch.

Staten Island is one of New York's 5 boroughs and is mostly residental, so very few tourists get off there, they just take the ferry. The island is 3 times larger then Manhattan! Despite that it is also the least populated borough, Staten Island has 469 000 inhabitants.
