350 Fifth Ave will be located at the intersection of Fifth and Smithfield in the heart of Downtown Pittsburgh. It will require the demolition of the 7-story Frank & Seder department store, built in 1917.

I'm not into this one. My vote goes to rehabbing the current building on that site. This thing looks so awkward.

I hope that's the case, but I'm not holding my breath. Astorino's track record isn't the best.

I didn't realize this design was by Astorino. I looked into it and it was DLA architects. Which then confused me more. I did work with Astorino through a different company. I am familiar with;

I looked at their site. Ugh. any type of design firm that uses the slogan "minimize risk. maximize results" scares me... LOL

Here is a screenshot from oxford's website. I actually really like how it interacts with the rest of the skyline. Fingers crossed that a tenant is found!

I also like the rendering in that perspective. I'm still a little torn tho between building a 30-story building or preserving what they have. I do have to say, Pittsburgh can certainly use something vertical in its skyline. At least it's not going to go away to make way for a one-or-two story building. I would raise hell if that were the case! I didn't exactly like that we lost the 5th and Wood building to make way for a 4-story no-big-deal Macys that ultimately closed up after what, 6 years? I must say tho, even that looks nice as Piatt Place...

^Well, according to the news article we will find out by the end of this year (in the next 90 days!) if the Burgh will be getting a SECOND huge tower to rise with the Tower at PNC Plaza; I feel like this development is a win-win. A renovation of the existing building would be great to but I would love to see this "sleeper block" suddenly anchored by two 30+ story glass curtain high rises.

And here's a larger resize of the potential SUPER block of two new 500-600 towers rising at the same time, both slated to be 33 floors for a total of $638 million in development of that block between Smithfield and Wood!

I'd be rather surprised if Oxford development can pull off an anchor tenant for this project and expect them to announce the renovation option. Still, there is hope and a few months to go in their self imposed deadline. If the skyscraper option gets nixed, it would be a win for the preservationists who are upset at the possible elimination of the existing building on site.
