Copenhagen got nearly undamaged out of WW2 ( a few bombings but nothing major ) - in this case I'm not exactly sure, my guess is age - many buildings of age was build with a lot of wood and organic material in them so fungus, rot and other related problems could have made it very expensive to fix
Or maybe someone felt it was a good spot for "modern" buildings
I made a error btw it's post WW1 not post WW2.. ( from the 20's )

My ( and the rest of the island's ) favorite place is Nyhavn..
Alternatively Gammel Strand and Islands Brygge are good places too..
( around the canals and habour and you really can't go wrong
)
