"Oakland: My Home, My Freedom"

For this set I decided to venture back to Jingletown and retrace the route I took the last time (from East Oakland to Downtown), albeit with a few key differences.

For one, in my previous Jingletown thread I highlighted that it was East Oakland's main artsy neighborhood. What I neglected to mention, however, is that much like Wiliamsburg in Brooklyn there are two distinct sides of Jingletown: North of 880 and South of 880. South of 880 (or the South Kennedy Tract) has lately become known for its artist population but still retains what some would call the "funkiness" of the neighborhood; it has no shortage of grit, only now that grit shares the space with the increasing influx of neighborhood murals and other assorted art pieces. Even the grit itself is being pushed out, though, as new apartments and condos spring up along the waterfront and the development pushes deeper into the neighborhood. True to the slowly shifting demographics of the neighborhood, at this point in time the local (and good) coffee shop sits across the street from the 7 Eleven. The changing income of JT is interesting given its history as a mill worker neighborhood.

North of 880 (or the North Kennedy Tract) on the other hand has barely been affected by the art resurgence in the South Kennedy Tract; the "new development" in this side of JT is the new public housing on E 10th St. & 29th Avenue. Interestingly enough though, the North Kennedy Tract is much more beholden to street art and graffiti than the South Kennedy Tract which creates an artistic rendering of sorts of the socioeconomic gap between the two sides. In this thread I only showed the street art in the North Kennedy Tract (specifically by the train tracks)... I've yet to show the neighborhood itself.

Another difference between this set and my previous set is that instead of going to Embarcadero Cove next and crossing the overpass to East Peralta/lower Rancho San Antonio, I did the opposite which meant that I had to get to Downtown through the rest of the Embarcadero Cove neighborhood and the Warehouse District (north of Jack London Square).

Anyway, here's the pics.

Very comprehensive coverage as always, well done! Excellent eye for some memorable street art/graffiti art this time around! A few of the shots looking straight on at the painted walls across the tracks look like ones I would have lensed, had I been there...I keep thinking I am going to get over there to stroll and shoot but I keep getting distracted.

@geomorph: I'd love to see your rendition of the area... I'm tired of being the only Oakland photographer on this board lol.

@ fflint: that's definitely my favorite area I've done in a while... on an unrelated note, for some reason whenever I'm low on inspiration I always end up in the more industrial parts of town or by the water, which in Oakland happen to be next to each other so it works out lol.

Oakland impressively stands on it own as a full city, ritz and gritz.

Your comment describes perfectly what I've been trying to capture with this project. Oakland is indeed a city - not a glorified suburb of SF - and it's not a ghetto city or a white collar city; it's simply a city. However, it's a city that has many things going for it; its rapidly growing art scene, its large music scene, its multi-tiered restaurant scene, its varied and (imo) interesting architecture, its beautiful natural setting, its varied people that literally come from all walks of life and its history make it a "regular city" that does not feel regular. At the very least, though, I hope that this project has shown that Oakland is more than anything a city of neighborhoods, and to throw a wide blanket over the whole or any part of Oakland is to ignore how the city ticks.

Amazing!

You've done a great job of capturing the different angles of Oakland, which has many different sides. I really liked the street art that you were able to capture. Thank you for giving us this amazing show case of Oakland.
