Some US states and some Canadian provinces don't issue front license plates, only rear ones are required in those jurisdictions.

Great pics of places few people will ever get to see! Thanks for posting it, I was really curious to see what this whole area would look like.

In Texas we have to have plates in the front and back. But here in Arkansas they only need em in the back. I dont know why certain states require them in the back and some require them in the back and front, hmmm. Cant speak for Canada though, didnt notice that at all when Ive been up there.

Only BC, Ontario, Manitoba and New Brunswick require front and rear plates, all other provinces and the territories just issue rear plates.

This sign:

has Cree, which is the people living in that region. (Inuktitut uses Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics but it has a slightly different symbol set; this is the Ojibwe/Cree symbol set.)

If you want to read it, I think it says: Mok alci kaa pacitinaa kanootwaaw / ce cii piihcetwaaw caka piihcewak

c is either ts or ch depending on the dialect, and e is pronounced like "eh!". I don't recognize any of those words. Cree in Quebec is probably not mutually intelligible with Ojibwe from Northwestern Ontario at all. cii might be chi, which in Ojibwe means "great". Biichiwakwaane in Ojibwe means "puts on his hat", maybe piihciwak has something to do with authority?

Very fascinating (and inspiring) photo thread..almost like a documentary. Like behead said, the great photos are just icing on the cake! Perhaps I'll summon up the willpower to do something like this myself one day....or not!

Yep, northern lights, a first time for me! And the license plates question has been answered, Quebec does not issue front plates!

That was truly one hell of an adventure! You have to love solitude, because when you drive that far without seeing nobody and then the night falls, you really get a sense of this solitude, it's powerful. It strikes you in the face! If that's what you love, then this road is made for you!

Maybe you'd want to get a CAA/AAA membership before overtaking this trip... I didn't have any, and decided to do it anyway, but just keep in mind that if you breakdown in Caniapiscau, you will have to call a towtruck, and it's gonna take them 1 day to get to you, and the bill will rise at a jaw-dropping 3,700$, that is, if you can find a way to call em! ... My lifeline was my dad, who i called from Radisson and allowed myself 3 days for the trip, after which i told him to send help if I hadn't got back to him! Do that if you want to scare the hell out of someone

i quite enjoy solitude and driving time alone, but man, a week of the sound of gravel (maybe even just one full day) might drive me bonkers. although a guarantee of the northern lights might keep me going.

really great, intense stuff. thanks for sharing it.

I can't express how fascinating I found this thread for the scenery alone. But the quality of the photos are top notch too. Growing up in the Sierras in California, I've driven on my share of long, dangerous, gravel roads. But, 10-20 miles is nothing compared to hundreds. Thanks!
