Moscow Parks and Estates

The land was purchased by the Empress Catherine II the Great in 1774. The construction of the estate and Palace began under architect V. Bazhenov.
Significant portion of it was built, then Bazhenov fell out of favor.
Some sources say Catherine disliked the pseudo Gothic design, other attribute this to the the fact Catherine discovered that V. Bazhenov was a free mason. The project was changed and construction was continued under architect M. Kazakov a few years later. However, after Catherine died, it was halted again, as Emperor Pavel had no plans to use it. For the next two centuries it stayed unfinished and decaying. Here is a pic from 2005 by Magellan source

During last few years the estate around the ruins has been brought into decent shape but the Palace remained as ruins. Finally, Moscow mayor Luzhkov decided to finish the construction. This is what resulted from this.

Nice park, seems popular with moscowites. So what is the palace used for?

Thrilling! I really love Russian architecture (and music). But I am left wondering if, in spite of good economic times in Russia, the Moscow mayor couldn't have found better uses for his money. What is the building, now that it's built, used for anyway (what with no Czar being left to live in it)? Museum? Art gallery?

IMO the money was spent right. Ruins by themselves are not free. Just maintaining, conserving ruins costs money - think about Athens, Rome, etc - if they did not spent money to maintain their historical sites - they would deteriorate a lot faster. Tourists who come to see ruins pay for maintanance - directly or indirectly. This was not the case with these ruins though. These abandoned walls have become dwelling for homeless, made park unsafe.

I wonder the same thing. I find it rather provoking actually. This kind of buildings have always been built just to show off how rich you are. It's one thing preserving the old ones, but do you really have to build new ones? Doesn't Moscow and Russia have lots of old beautiful buildings to take care of and spend the money on instead, you can ask.

But it looks beautiful, it really does.

This was not preservation, this was completion of an unfinished project. The choice had been between 1) spending money forever to keep it in the state of pic #1 of this thread and 2) fixing the park and finishing the Palace to make an attractive place for Muscovites (foreign tourists are welcome if they care). Anybody who thinks that preservation of authentic ruins for eons to come is free is delusional. Please check how much Athens, Rome and other places with climates much milder than Moscow's spend to keep their ruins preserved. It makes sense when 1) it is important for cultural identity of a nation and 2) it keeps tourists coming and paying for it directly or indirectly. This was not the case with this estate. The park and Palace in the unfinished state had not represented anything particularly significant in terms of historical events or cultural heritage. Neither was the park a draw for tourists - rather it had become an attraction for homeless people and criminals. My opinion - this was the case of money well spent. I am glad we are now rich enough to have done so.

Another thing I forgot, Olga. You say that the money could have been spent on fixing many other things in Russia. There is no denial that there are many such places. Some are being restored, other hopefully will be in time before they fall apart. However, Moscow should not be held responsible for the whole Russia. Tsaritsyno was done using Moscow's budget, not federal money.

Of course, one could always argue that some other buildings in Moscow should have been fixed first... To me the most important thing is not the order in which they are fixed but their existence at all. Many culturally significant buildings are being knocked down by greedy developers and investors. This is a huge problem, but restoration of this park and completion of the Palace is not the reason for it.

Izmajlovo Park

Perhaps it would be a good idea to rename this thread to "Moscow Parks and Estates".

There are many, and most are off the beaten tourist path. Off the top of my head, only the big ones, in no particular order - Neskuchnyj Sad (Gorky Park) Sokolniki, Izmajlovo, Botanical Garden + VDNKh, Losinyj Ostrov, MSU campus and adjacent embarkment area (Vorob'jevy gory- Sparrow Hills), Serebriannyj Bor, Kolomenskoe, Victory Park (Poklonnaja Gora), Kuzminki, Kuskovo, Ostankino, Bitsa, Krylatskoe, and many smaller others. An attempt at a full list in Russian is here and a much shorter in English - here.

A Russian site on Moscow parks.

This one, Izmajlovo, photo by Bolik, March 30 2008, is East of center. It is much bigger than shown here (1608 hectares). Clean, but the trails need work.

a couple of Russian links

http://www.izmailovsky-park.ru/
http://www.moseco.ru/ru/showArticle/atlID/16

This thread is far from covering what the park is, but this is typical of Moscow in general - it is hard to grasp the scope if you give just one shot.
