Where Hell Freezes Over – Breckenridge, Colorado

The town of Breckenridge is an old mining town that is 9,600 feet above sea level and was created in 1859. It affords a rich mining and frontier history that's been diligently protected by Breckenridge locals. The town's 254-building National Historic District is one of the largest in Colorado. The Summit Historical Society regularly shows off seven historic sites on their 12-block public walking tour of downtown Breckenridge. International skiers rave about the massive, yet accessible four-mountain resort at Breckenridge, where 2,043 acres of ski runs practically bump into town. The average January high and low are 31 °F and 0 °F respectively.

I drove up to Breckenridge, about an hour and a half from Denver, to check out the 18th year of the International Snow Sculpture Championships and I shot these photos. 16 teams from 10 countries compete in carving a twenty-ton, 12 foot tall block of snow into art using only their hands and permitted hand tools.

This is something different for SSP, but I hope you enjoy the tour.

Inside the Eisenhower Memorial Tunnel, the highest vehicular tunnel in the world at 11, 158 feet. It traverses through the Continental Divide with a length of 1.697 miles.

Random condos along the way in Silverthorne.

Mountain above Frisco.

Many of the newer structures try to blend in with the old, but not all achieve their goal.

This yellow house is currently a Starbucks.

This is the size the blocks of snow start out at, sans the beer bottles.

Team China – “The Warrior and the Moon”

Team USA, Breckenridge, Colorado – “Break Out”. The head splitting open represents a shift in thinking and creating new technologies for sustainable energy sources.

Team Canada, Ontario – “Just Spooling Around”

Team USA, Vermont – “Teeter – Toddler”

Team Netherlands – “Calla Lilies”

Team Germany – “Bridge of Tolerance”

Team Canada, Yukon – “Swan Song”, There is a Shaman in the middle calling forward the swans to feed his people to prevent starvation.

Team USA, New York – “Curiosity”, Looks more like Polar Bears about to have an Eskimo Pie for lunch.

Team Mexico, Colima – “Bucefalo”, means a horse who has a free, indomitable and resistant spirit. Of course all the Denverites were calling it the “Denver Bronco", which seemed to insult the artist.

Team Lithuania – “Who will be the Best?”

Team USA, Wisconsin – “Battling Bison – The Rut”, my personal favorite.

Team USA, Minnesota – “Cold Hands, Warm Heart”

Team Mexico, Mexico City – “Faces within the Waves”

Team France – “Sculptures”

Team USA, Loveland, Colorado – “Community”

Team Spain – “Inauguration, Tomorrow”

Snow drift piles created by the wind.

Wind and ice surfing

Frozen water fall, shot taken while driving down the highway.

Here is what Breckenridge looked like on May 5th, 2007. These are the newer structures at the base of the mountain but after ski season had ended, hence few people. That is until the Jazz Festival, Film Festival and mountain bike races begin in the summer.

Thank you for looking!

Photo thread of the year so far. It was worth it just for the sculptures!

Good thread title!

Love those sculptures. Must take some serious skillz to carve that shit up. I was gonna say I like the Battling Bison as my favorite, but after I saw you wrote that, I feel like a copycat. That is the best one, I think.

Also, is that your blue eyed husky, Aztec?

And lastly, this picture is too cute:

Very quaint, looks nice. It must be interesting to live there, with such a nomadic population always moving through.

In an odd coincidence, I grabbed a sweatshirt out of the closet today, and it happened to be my Breckenridge one, that my aunt in Colorado sent me.
Never been there though - at least now I've seen it.

Beautiful! I was going to say the Bison was my favorite too, but since it's been picked a couple of times I'll say I liked the Warrior and the Moon a lot also.

Have not been to this town yet, hope to get up there soon. Charming town, great photos!

Thanks for all the comments! Looks like PhotoBucket didn't like the nude sculptures, though they were not provacative at all?

I wish the husky were mine. He looked intimidating but was very friendly! That is a very popular breed for the locals as there were several running around.

I agree, it would be interesting with the nomadic population. However, everyone is friendly and congenial, almost to a point that it could scare a cautious large city dweller. It takes a journey to get to the town and once there, one would typically have to have money to participate in any of the events. This is one of the few free events there. Vail and Aspen are similar with the friendly demeanor given the climate and the reason anyone would visit these areas.

Thanks MobyLL! "Warrior and the Moon" is my second favorite. Since you are in Denver, you could do a day trip up and still see these. They are left up until at least Feb. 5th, weather permitting.

woozers denveraztec!

Breckenridge is once of my favorite mountain ski towns out west that I've been to. Less pretentious then Aspen and Lake Tahoe, and more of a "real" town then Vail. Breckenridge and Ketchum, Id are my favorites I've been to out west.

You are so right JackStraw, Breckenridge is much more laid back then Aspen and Vail and the people are more down-to-earth. Aspen can have that 'Hollywood/Actor' flare and glam that is almost non-existent in Breckenridge. Probably because you have to drive to get to Breck but can fly into Aspen. Overall though, most mountain town locals are friendly and good people.

You always come up with great ideas....

.....what a great idea for a photo thread. Breckenridge used to be this quiet little mountain town....now its right up there with Telluride, Aspen and Vail. Its a nice place to visit, but pretty pricey now.

Great pictures, looks like an amazing little town, if a little kitsch. 11,000 ft is incredibly high... and what's 31F in real temperature though?
