What's a guy to do when your city has the worst air quality on earth?

Schools are closed tomorrow, all sensitive groups should stay inside, it looks like fog but it smells like well, a camp fire-no pun intended, oh and SF normal AQI is between 10-25

Well it is an exceptional and transient situation, but your suggestion makes sense on a transient basis. I took your advice and am typing this in Arizona. I feel for the friends I left behind one of whom has already needed ER care due to exacerbation of asthma.

Not an uncommon occurrence in the cities of wildfire-prone western Canada either.

My thoughts exactly.

There's a big storm on the way, S.F. will have some of the cleanest air in the nation in about 3 days.

This isn't true, Bay Area usually has bad air quality.

San Francisco Air Quality 2000-2017 by number of "good" days annually:

Do you ever have a clue what you are talking about? If by the "Bay Area" you mean the Central Valley or perhaps even the South Bay (in spots), you might be sort of right about the air if wrong about the geography, but the central Bay Area--Oakland and especially SF--normally has some of the cleanest air in North America because the prevailing west wind blows all the pollution eastward into the Central Valley leaving the local air pristine.

The problem recently has been an unusual "blocking high" pressure system which has both kept it from raining in what should be the early part of the rainy season, thereby encouraging fires, but also shifting the wind patterns in the Bay Area so that the wind comes from the east and not, as usual, from the west.

Parade of storms to heighten mudslide danger, douse wildfires in California this week
Kyle Elliott, AccuWeather meteorologist
November 20, 2018

Quote:
Beginning at midweek and continuing through Black Friday, a series of storm systems will bring sweeping changes to the recent weather pattern that has been locked in across California.

-----

Despite another dry day on Tuesday, a large-scale change in the weather pattern will bring heavy, soaking rainfall back to much of the state for the rest of the week.

The core of the storm systems will take aim at northern parts of the state, where a general 2 to 4 inches of rain is anticipated through Black Friday.
While 1 to 2 inches of rain could reach the Bay Area, much less rain is in store for Los Angeles and San Diego. Southern California will miss out on much, if any, rainfall after Wednesday night.

Each round of rain will be accompanied by snow in the Sierra Nevada. While being a boon for the ski industry, the snow can create treacherous conditions in the passes (including Interstate-80's Donner Summit).

While the rainfall will be beneficial for firefighting efforts and allow firefighters to gain the upper hand on the ongoing blazes, enough rain will fall to heighten the risk of mudslides and debris flows in areas impacted by the fires.
The storm will cleanse the atmosphere.

Quote:
On a brighter note, the rain will help to rid California of widespread smoke that has loomed over the state since the Camp Fire ignited and has caused poor air quality in places such as San Francisco.

“Where Californians have spent days engulfed in toxic wildfire smoke, incoming rain and wind will offer dramatic relief later this week," said AccuWeather Meteorologist and air quality blogger Faith Eherts.

Periods of heavy rain are known to "wash out" the atmosphere of pollutants and smoke, she stated.

"Gusty onshore winds moving into Northern California at the end of the week will be another factor in air quality improvement as cleaner ocean air pushes into the Central Valley," said Eherts.

Maybe it'll be black snow though.

Holy crap. I remember the wildfires here in 2011 brought in smoke that you could see and smell, but nothing quite like that. It definitely bugged me, though, being that I have asthma.

274 is bad, but we used to get to that number at least a dozen times every winter in Shanghai. I'll always remember when Shanghai reached 600 in December 2013, and everyone lost their collective shit. It was the only time the state-owned press turn on the government demanding change. Beijing reached 1000 that day.

Anyway, I guess what I'm saying is that it sucks, but you will survive.

On an everyday basis, severely bad air quality will take a toll on one's health and longevity.
