I apologize for posting three St. John's-related photo threads. This one, however, I am going to take with me wherever I travel and photograph all panoramas of all sorts of places. And, I'll add them here - but it'll be mostly St. John's, of course.

I like all of these photos but especially the panoramas that show residential density. For a small city St John's packs an impressive punch.

It may be even smaller than you think, unless you looked up the population.

The city itself has a population of 106,000. However, it's suburbs are still independent cities and towns - so the uninterrupted urban area has a population of 165,000.

I'm not sure of the intercity rivalries or anything, so I hope I'm not stepping on any toes, but the physical setting and how the city is arranged around the water reminds me of a smaller, hillier, and more tightly-knit Halifax.

Definitely. And we're both often compared to San Francisco, which is a wonderful compliment.

As for rivalries... while we're both very small cities, Halifax is larger by a significant enough percentage that there isn't much competition. We're in different little leagues, ha!

However, St. John's isn't accurately well known in Canada and I find the farther west you go, the more accurate the impression of the city becomes. Conversely, people in the Maritimes have some pretty unusual views about Newfoundland.

In Halifax, for example, I heard far stupider things about my city than in Vancouver. I remember being laughed at when I said St. John's was one of the largest cities in Atlantic Canada. I remember a taxi driver saying, "You must be excited to drive on a divided highway! They don't have those in Newfoundland!"

So that could be a sign of past, historical rivalries, perhaps? But today, there's not much. Many of my relatives live in Halifax and the surrounding area.

I'll have to keep coming back to this thread to see how your camera captures our amazing city

St. John's: it's a smaller Halifax, but with less gun crime. There really isn't much of a rivalry between cities, though if we weren't isolated on an island maybe that'd be different, considering the rivalry between Halifax and Moncton that exists, and that we have a sizable population advantage over Moncton
