Birmingham's gotta be running out of empty buildings...

*edit*

developer is pondering adding 2-4 stories to this building. kinda odd given the building's age IMO....

Powell School developer awarded $3.7 million HUD loan

Bryan Davis
Birmingham Biz Journal

Quote:
The multi-million dollar project that will convert the historic Powell School building into apartments got a huge boost this week.

The U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development awarded the City of Birmingham a $3.7 million federal loan this week to aid in the redevelopment of the city's oldest school building, located at the corner of 24th Street North and Sixth Avenue.

The building was constructed in 1888 and closed in 2001.

Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell announced the award will be given to the developer, Integral Group, which will use the money to acquire and convert the building into 24 studio one-and-two-bedroom units.

.....................

Aside from the HUD loan, the project was among the first recipients of Alabama's state historic tax credits in 2013.

.....................

The property survived a 2011 fire, which severely damaged the building.
In previous reports, the project was said to cost between $3.5 million and $4.5 million to complete.

I drove around the Parkside area, and WOW, things are really building up. Much taller thank I thought things would be (even if things are only around 3 to 5 floors).

Everything is looking great, and the Southside seems to be a chaos of construction!

Also, some good activity on our old bones highrises!

Another note, as of July 15th, I'll officially be a citizen of the City of Birmingham! Looking forward to moving into the city

Congrats. Sure hope this doesn't mean you'll be completely vacant from Tuscaloosa.

I will certainly visit, but I won't be there 24/7.

It is great to see movement on the Bristol site!
Hope to see some movement on the Highland Avenue Condo project, that and the Homewood Suites should be a game changer for the Southside.

Sorry, I've been out of the loop for a few years...isn't the railroad park supposed to eventually link up with Sloss? I remember it being a long-term vision, but I'm curious whether that is that still on the table?

I also haven't been able to dig up any info on that entertainment district by the BJCC. I'm curious how that is doing.

I'll have to make it back to town, sometime..

^yes, rotary trail will be the primary link between railroad park and sloss. a new trail / bike path has been added along 1st avenue south as well. check out http://www.redrocktrail.org/ for the long term vision.

the uptown entertainment district is completely built out and 100% occupied. the few times I've been it is packed.

if you haven't been here in a few years, you might not recognize the area around railroad park.

Oh, duh! Completely forgot what the Rotary Trail was for
Yes, everyone I talk to keeps telling me to go back, soon. Maybe I will next summer.
