That's what makes it so creepy. You have children themed stuff next to mirrored ceilings and sleazy Biff Tannen style jacuzzis.

As tacky as that is, it's not even close to the golden palace shrouded in uber-chintz I would expect Dion to reside in.

Nothing says "I, as an architect, fully comprehend the beauty and capability of the raw materials with which I work" as well as brutalism.

Also,

Nothing says "LOOK AT WHAT THIS IS MADE OF LOL" as well as brutalism.

Well, someone just ruined my childhood.

Looking back on the ice room with lots of mirrors I stayed in - yikes.

Make your own thread for all the none architectural stuff. This thread isn't for that

I like your contributions and all, but this thread has 18 pages in 3 months, good for 6 pages a month, more than one a week.

I used to like the other thread, but then every time I came on, it was photoshops and pictures of Eddy Savoie and other controversial public personas. When you want to talk about ugly canadian architecture/urban landscape, it's very frustrating. I simply stopped visiting the thread, and I'm sure it's the case for many.

I suggest you make a separate thread where you and MolsonExport can talk about ugly canadian personas/policies and post whatever pictures/photoshops you like without derailing the present thread.

Message received. Back to more dry discussion of mediocre urban development.

It comes as a bit of a surprise to me that I was derailing a thread that I had started, and that had attracted nearly two million views. Whereas when I read the provincial economies thread, it is just a shit show of pro- and anti- pipelines/oil-sands rhetoric and climate-change denial garbage. Or the politics thread with selfie-socks, drama teacher, so-and-so's turban, etc. Which for some forumers, are the only "contributions" that they have ever made to SSP.

thanks though, for sharing your impressions. I won't waste my time. Over and out.

I miss the days of discussions of retail hierarchy and the ever burgeoning niche retail market dominated by cupcake shops and artisinal olive oil.

On that same tangent, any recent photos of the ugly craptoid retail environment of the Agincourt Mall

Nothing says bland retail hellscape like a Boston Pizza. Inside and out these things are the definition of the boxy bland chain restaurants that plague Canada. From the bland boxy exteriors that look exactly like every single other chain restaurant on the planet, to the interiors which look like a cross between an IKEA werehouse and a TGI Friday’s. Even the food is ugly, it’s all microwaved because of course it is.

Here's a small "what were they thinking?" series. Ugly buildings in otherwise pretty nice areas:

This one looks like a Victorian house got 50% converted into a fast food restaurant.

Why?

"Father of Confederation" plaque next to low bid construction

This belongs in an ugly 70's suburb. Bonus points for hideous mansard roof.

They were all thinking "I want a high return on investment until I sell the building in 20 years so I can retire".

I'm pleased to announce the latest and final phase of the architectural abortion that is Davenport Village:

http://urbantoronto.ca/news/2019/01/...an-resubmitted

Here's what the rest of the neighbourhood looks like: https://goo.gl/maps/PGShwZM7kK62

This isn't in the suburbs, btw (though it's in what is indisputably already the ugliest part of the inner city). At least it will finally be over.

^Ugh just terrible.

It's interesting that they did such a good job with Foundry Lofts / rehab of the old locomotive factory. But also terrible they tore down the other (larger) factory building. The replacement buildings fronting Lansdowne are better than what's in the interior of the development but that isn't saying much.

Foundry Lofts: https://goo.gl/maps/KVj4ogjpipH2

Other building in 2009: https://goo.gl/maps/LrhF7fwiN152

And today.... https://goo.gl/maps/Sxdhz6zJAnE2

What an Atrocity. Nothing clicks or fits at all. I’m gonna nominate Concord Cityplace for worst condo complex in Toronto. Just a sea of bland glassy garbage. The entire complex feels like a soulless cut and paste development. It’s garbage like Cityplace that’s killing Toronto.

The second worst condo complex in the city is most likely New York Towers. It’s like the Chrysler buildings hideous plastic brother. The endless suburbia surrounding it just makes it.

Definitely very bland, but it could be worse for new constructions... Take Montreal's soul-sucking prefab or ugly brick mishmash:

At least these aren't Downtown but man are they uninspiring.

Building Number 1: Honestly it would still be horrible without that green paint but man that green paint is just not needed. It just makes the building look plain old stupid.

Building(s) Number 2: My least favourite of the bunch. Not only is the first one (and the one the photo is focused on) painted in every single horrible colour ever created. But the brick one behind it is crass and cobbled together.

Buildings Number 3: These write their own description.

Building Number 4: The architectural equivalent of Swiss Chalet’s white chicken. Dry flavourless and guaranteed to make you feel empty inside.

I’m gonna one up these with one of the blandest, most colourless, soul sucking buildings built in Toronto, The Sheraton.
