So, I was curious and I tallied up the number of residential units proposed near MARTA stations. I came up with over 8,500! If all of these projects come to fruition, I would imagine that ridership numbers would be influenced.

Here's how I came to that figure:

North Ave Sta
300 @ 131 Ponce
280 @ JLB Apt Project on 5th

Midtown Sta
391 @ 811 Peachtree
320 @ Skyhouse South
39 @ 867 Peachtree
700 @ Spring St Student Housing
350 @ 33 Peachtree Pl
330 @ 77 12th St
320 Skyhouse Midtown

Arts Center
1,300 @ 98 14th St
351 @ AMLI Midtown
300 @ Metropolitan Ctr
48 @ Wieldland Condos

Lindbergh
359 @ Elan Lindbergh

Buckhead
359 @ Crescent Terminus
364 @ Skyhouse Buckhead
219 @ 3380 Peachtree

Lenox
374 @ Lenox Square Apts
800 @ AMLI roxboro Rd

King Memorial
386 @ Walton Development

Decatur
240 @ Carter Development
192 @ 163 Clairemont
210 @ Trinity Triangle

And to think, this only includes one project that is part of MARTA's new TOD initiative. This list should increase once they get going.

Keith Parker, MARTA's dogged general manager, told the Rotary Club of Atlanta this week the system could be twice its current size, as it pales in comparison to transit authorities (Washington D.C. and San Francisco) launched around the same time. Parker has pinpointed where the next MARTA branches will go — the Clifton Road corridor, Interstate 20 east and Georgia 400 toward Alpharetta — just as soon as dollars start pouring in. From somewhere. [Saporta Report]

I got to give it up to Keith, This man is awesome he doing some greater things with Marta, because he know Marta has potential. Well I got a story for you guys

I have a friend that works for Marta and he's a supervisor, he took me to one of their meetings and they are thinking about selling the Marta Train .....JUST WAIT!!!!!!
And they are interested to build a high-speed rail like overseas, Isn't that great but they're also going greener, I took some notes what marta said their about to do:

Green space
Remodeling stations
Food Carts & Restaurants
Mixed-used developments
New trains & buses (still proposing)
Residential
New Rules and more transits....

Thats Great Hope it gets more dense at the Stations and bus stops.

I wonder what's going on with transit? I remember there were talks of expanding rail to Emory and then up to Cumberland? Is this still in the works? Or am I remembering wrong?

This was mentioned in the article posted on the previous page.

Quote:
After his talk, Parker was asked whether he had a strategy on how best to get funding to expand the rail transit system — from the state, another regional transportation tax vote, federal funding or a combination of all of the above.

He said there was no plan at this time, but that MARTA would want to work with all possible partners to try to expand transit in the region.

“We need to be a more robust system,” Parker said. “MARTA needs to be able to go to more places.”

This is great stuff! I only wish the city didn't require all of these developments to have so many parking spaces that everyone that will live and shop there could easily drive and not have to take MARTA... Now that would REALLY start to boost those ridership numbers!

It's not the City. The City of Atlanta has some of the lowest residential parking requirements in the nation. In fact, many area's have caps of 1 space per bedroom. It's the banks.

I think MARTA is in dire need to rebranding.
In the least MARTA should adapt the Atlanta Streetcar colors.
And changing the MARTA name wouldn't hurt.

I'm against totally re vamping the stations. They need to fix what's broken and clean them up. Add advertising if it makes sense for MARTA's revenue and please up the frequency of trains.

Agreed. It would be great if they updated the trains with some new ones, and rails ..... they've been their for 20+ years. I believe its time for a change!!! And I Love the streetcar colors, they really make us seem so green a natural!!! And the funny thing is even the Beltline has these colors.

From an outsider's perspective:

Rebranding yes, name change.. ehhhh.

It has been a few years since I last rode the MARTA, but as I remember, I was never in love with the signs. They were always easily recognizable, a plus, but whenever I saw them I always thought "70s..." I don't think the colors need to change, that might necessitate a change in signage colors. In a city full of trees, having mass transit signage and branding emphasizing blues and greens might cause them to more easily be lost in the scenery, especially for outsiders who aren't as familiar with the system.

As far as the name goes, I think it's fine. For those who have knowledge of mass transit in the Southeast it is widely known and recognized, and for those of us who are familiar with Atlanta, the "word" MARTA is synonymous with transit and rapid movement.

I think what is needed as far as branding goes is enhancement and refreshment, not necessarily a completely new direction. Presentation can be a big issue for fickle Southern transit riders.

Yes, they should capitalize more on advertising within the stations. Think of ads all along the Peachtree Center escalators, London Tube style.

I'm not so hot on a name change because I like the existing name and it has recognition even past our region. Train frequencies will improve soon. They have already pushed the 7pm turnaround at Lindbergh to 9pm and we should be getting increased frequency on top of that in May.

Keith Parker is slowly but surely changing state leader's opinion of Marta, namely with his ability to turn a projected 2013 30+million defecit into a 9+million profit.

MARTA can stay named marta but they need to update the logo, the current one does look dated. It seems like the new ride with dignaty rules or whatever they're called are working, and over 500 people have already been banned from riding. To me they just need to make some of the stations not look like total garbage. The signs are outdated and never work, and at least 40% of the lights at 5 points are always out. The Dome station is also depressing and dark. I ride marta at least once a week and I do like it, but some fresh paint, good cleaning, new lights, and updated electronics would go a very long way.

For whatever reason, to me, metro stations in NY, Chicago, and DC (which i ride often as I have a lot of fam in those cities) have a different kind of "old" that I like. I don't know what it is. The old tiles in NY feel like antiques, while the old tiles in marta makes me feel like it's a dirty place.
