From Seville to Tangier, From Europe to Africa: Crossing the Continents

My first foray into North Africa began in sultry Sevilla in Andalusia. Seville is everything I expected, oranges, yellow and white streets, amazing tapas, sun (though not nearly as much as I hoped), bullfights and despite not seeing it the presence of flamenco was definitely felt. Seville and Andalusia are the Spain I have always been seduced by, and I would love to go back and spend more time in the entire region. This time it was really just an excuse to enjoy a taster before travelling by boat over to Morocco.

I had always been attracted to the idea of arriving into the vast continent by boat, and it really is mind-blowing that Africa is so so so close to Europe. It only took about 40 mins on the horrendously nauseating crossing from a town called Tarifa in Spain, to the port of Tangier (you can literally see Africa from Europe). The second you arrive in Tangier you know you are in a different land altogether. The sights and sounds of the medina feel a million miles from Southern Europe. One of the reasons I haven't been to Morocco sooner is that it is so close to home it made it seem less exotic, but the second you arrive you know it is everything you could want it to be. Its almost as mind-blowing as if a country as exotic as India were just across the channel from England or something. The narrow streets of the medina, the clothes, the call to prayer, the smells of spices.....

Anyway, this is really a Seville thread as I only spent a short afternoon in Tangier before ovine on, so for a real taste of The Maghreb, you will have to wait for the coming 4 threads....

I´ve liked the scenes you captured in Seville. The pictures about the bullfight are amazing. Love the colours and resolution of all your images.

I lived two years in Seville, in Triana, when I was a kid, and I can say your pictures show faithfully the taste of Seville.

Nice pictures. Crossing into Africa by boat must be incredible. Tangiers is kind of like the Tijuana of Europe.

Great quality as usual, vibrant and colorful.

I'll be visiting Spain in October, but have yet to decide whether to choose Sevilla or Valencia. This set certainly made a powerful case for Sevilla.

Great pics Xander! Was in Seville last year and had a great time. A different Spain than what I was used to...

Seville is great for a one or two day trip, but personally I would go for Valencia. Bigger city, more to see and do including the Calatrava buildings.
