Over Winnipeg - going around the city on a beautiful summers day

Flew into Winnipeg from Calgary. There were some fair sized weather systems in the area so we flew right around the city to land and had a great view of most of a good part of the city. Unfortunately we weren't far enough south to see the university and the new stadium.

This is coming in from the west about a hundred miles west of Winnipeg

The west end of the city. The old Jets arena and Blue Bomber stadium were in the commercial area in the right center. Assiniboine park and zoo are in the lower left.

A larger view with the airport in the upper left and downtown in the upper right. They have planted tons of trees in the city. The area in the center left in River Heights. Looking down many of the streets there, the tress form a canopy and fill in the sky. That is Pembina Highway going from the lower left towards downtown. It is the main road to the US.

Starting to swing north. The area in the center right is called the Forks. It is where the city started and is where the Assiniboine and Red Rivers meet. the big blue circular building is the Museum of Human Rights which is nearing completion.





A couple of close-ups of downtown and the Forks with the Museum of Human Rights. There are walk ways all along the 2 rivers. the baseball stadium at the Forks is easy to see.

I have to say, I was very impressed with Winnipeg when I passed through earlier this summer. I wish that the bus station had been downtown though, so I could have seen the city better.

Nice sharp aerials. It's cool to see how dense the housing is just southwest of the Legislature Building, along the Assiniboine. We had breakfast at a restaurant along a real cool street near that area back in 2004. That was an awesome trip, we drove from Calgary to Winnipeg and liked the prairie scenery: canola fields, bales of hay, long trains, grain elevators and interestingly named towns (Medicine Hat, Moose Jaw, Swift Current). Course, we did like the mountains in Banff a bit more...

That's a nice overview, literally. Flying from the east I don't ever go over downtown like that, although I'm crossing my fingers to get a stadium shot when I come in next month.

A beautiful landscape, centered by a beautiful, varied urban grid, with a wonderful core uninterrupted by wide freeways choking off whole neighborhoods. Thanks for sharing one of my favorite cities to see on here.

I had no idea that Portage La Prairie is set on an oxbow lake. I wonder if it's the biggest town sitting on an oxbow lake and not on the accompanying river.

Nice stuff. Those Central Winnipeg aerials show that while Winnipeg may not have glitzy skyline, it more than makes up for that with fantastic density for a city of its size.

I like the way the city is laid out, especially the gridded neighborhoods under that sexy urban forest.

Very nice photos. Winnipeg is a city I think that is under appreciated for what it offers. I started to think about the city recently since one of the worst fake-reality shows in TV history, Siberia, was filmed in part not far from the area.

One thing I love about the core is how expansive it is for a city this size. While Winnipeg doesn't have supertall buildings, its core is easily as large as other cities this size that may have a metropolitan population of 2 million. Just goes to show you that all that sprawl outside the core doesn't really have purpose, because Winnipeg does a lot more with fewer people.
