Des Moines, while I'm sure is a nice place, probably has a museum. Chicago has museums. The difference between big cities and not-so-big cities is variety, whether that be food, jobs, transportation, housing type, people, etc.

Oh, don't go there. I've read that Jacksonville rivals Toronto! [must be true, right?]

ah yes, the might skyline of bend.

i'm generally not one to sing the praises of smaller mid-tier midwest city skylines, but bend makes des moines look like manhattan.

i don't think bend even has a single building over 10 stories.

i think the des moines skyline looks pretty damn good for a city of its size.

it even has a building over 600' tall, which is kind of a big deal for a US metro area of only ~650K.

not even portland can make that claim.

portland (MSA 2.4 million) is in an entirely different class of city than a place like des moines (MSA 650K).

size-wise, portland more closely aligns with midwest cities like cleveland, columbus, cincinnati, indianapolis, st. louis, kansas city, and milwuakee.

A new 600 footer is a big deal and would be gladly accepted in every city as a sign of current and future economic vitality.

I've always been impressed with Des Moines' skyline. same goes for Little Rock--both Des Moines and Little Rock are virtually identical in population to Boise, but have much taller, more established and impressive skylines.

I'd be thrilled with a 500-600 footer in Boise some day, but I'm not holding my breath.

no, i didn't say that des moines' skyline is "amazing".

i said that it looks pretty damn good FOR A CITY ITS SIZE.

which is a perfectly cromulent opinion to hold.

i raise you lexington, ky. smaller, and has real neighborhoods nuzzle right up to downtown with proper brick townhouses, PLUS an urban growth boundary. it also has something huge downtown under construction not seen in that photo.

not being very familiar with either des moines or lexington "on the ground", i'll take your word for it on the urban form tip.

and given the different pedigrees/ages of the two cities in question, that would make a lot sense.

but on a straight skyline comparison, i would put des moines pretty far ahead of lexington.

yeah, certainly. i have family in old neighborhoods of lexington and it's nice to easily walk downtown under a tree canopy looking at quality 19th century housing. lexington specifically disallowed expressway construction downtown or in the core at all while my experiences in des moines are decidedly more car oriented but i did just find this... https://goo.gl/maps/GCryWzDHfMQ2

the big development downtown lexington was supposed to be a 30 story skyscraper but apparently was reduced down to whatever this is topped out. there were multiple developers and starts/stops...i've been looking at the hole for years.
