Islands of Asia Pt. 1: A Fine City

I'm spending my winter break visiting various islands in Southern Asia, and I happened to bring my camera with me. That's about all I can say... it almost feels surreal that I'm even here, and especially since I know many people from the places I'm visiting.

The first up on my trip was Singapore. I was honestly expecting something entirely different than what I got... I went in thinking that the atmosphere would be oppressive given the country's reputation for strict law enforcement (thus the dubious moniker "A Fine City") but what I actually found was a very easy-going city, and a beautiful one at that. What I was surprised by is how easy it is to get around Singapore... the metro and bus service is excellent, and it runs more often than anything I've used in the states, including NYC. I also had no idea that Singapore was as ethnically diverse as it is... while obviously there's a lot of foreign tourists, the more typical neighborhoods I passed through were also pretty multicultural.

One stereotype that is absolutely true about Singapore however is how mall-centric the place is... shopping seems to be the national hobby. It's surprising because of how solid the urban structure in many of Singapore's neighborhoods is; the locals seemed to congregate more at the malls than in the commercial districts though.

This is how my four days in Singapore were spent...

It's nice to see photos of Singapore from the point of view of a tourist as opposed to a professional tourist photographer.
#34, #60 - I've heard about those enclosed biosphere structures.
#88 - also, seen other photos of that 'ship' on top of a high rise.
If you have inside photos of #34,#60,#88, please post it.

Great pictures! I'm looking forward to the other places you are visiting.

Aloe vera soda? That's interesting, to say the least. Did you try any of their crazy drinks?

Wow. Great thread. I expected it to be kind of sterile but it actually looks pretty lived in and maybe even a bit gritty. I really like the low rise neighborhoods.

nice thread. Cool to see you doing your thing outside SF. I wanted to get to singapore last year but chose Hong Kong instead. Keeping an eye out for your next stop.

thanks for these photos.

i'm really interested in going to singapore, but it's quite an expensive place and there's so many other tempting cities nearby that you can visit for a fraction of the price.

singapore has a pretty unfortunate reputation in the west. i think a lot of it has to do with william gibson's "disneyland with the death penalty" essay, which was a piece of drive-by journalism if there ever was one. in any case, it seems to me that many of its more authoritarian excesses have been reigned in lately, even if the government still exerts a lot of control over media and politics.

Great! You are covering a lot of ground! I would like to do that. I'm sure you enjoyed the food as Anthony Bourdain during his visits to Singapore.

Ah...SimCity in the Jungle...a great city to roam around in.

The expansion of the Marina area in the last 5 years is nothing short of exceptional. Question: is it difficult to walk to the Sands or is there a transit stop? It was all under construction when I was there in 2006 and I can't really remember.
