That is actually an important reason. There is an evolving science on gate hold seating. The separation of the armrests discourages people from taking two seats and encourages people to sit next to someone when they might otherwise not. Seats with a single narrow armrest, or none at all, are unattractive when a stranger is next to it. These particular seats have been proven to end up with a higher occupancy factor than most other designs. They are also very durable and easy to clean. And finally, they are firm enough to discourage people from camping out in them. If you've got that much time that the seat comfort level bothers you, the airport wants you buying stuff. These exact seats are gaining a lot of popularity around the world. London Heathrow T3 uses them as well.

This might be a dumb question, but why haven't they started on the South Terminal yet?

They've always had North and South in 2 separate phases. My guess is to not have the projects be SUCH a traffic nightmare to everyone.

That's it exactly. Also about to happen is the demolishing of the parking decks on both sides (North first), to be replaced by new 8 level ones.

They are building the West parking garage before the North and South parking decks are demoed.

Have they started this yet? I know they thought they would have started by now, but I haven't been on that side recently to see it with my own eyes.

Plans are to start construction of the ATL West parking deck as early as this summer and to complete it by May 31, 2019.

I didn't realize the West deck was first, but that makes total sense. Thanks for the clarification.

Well yes, that's exactly what I was referring to, but I haven't heard or seen anything about the actual groundbreaking.

This is it. I can't deal with the incompetence of this city any more...they don't even have contingent planning for simple electrical outage situations. Me and Delta are relocating.

Thousands of passengers worldwide impacted by Atlanta airport power outage

Sad to say, but it's a good thing this happened today (on a not-so-busy day) versus, say, later this upcoming week with all of the Christmas traffic.
