Yeah that picture is one of the eeriest skyscraper shots i've ever seen. It looks like it belongs in "Ghostbusters".

Great tour of a great city.

Great tour

That is some styling. Like they knew they had to do something special to live up to the street number

Seattle is one of my favorite american city. Not only because it's my sistercity but it's just a great big city with nice, urban feel. Your thread shows it excellent

You really captured how urbanized the inner core of Seattle is with those aerial shots. In some ways it kind of reminded me of Sydney a little bit. As far as most urbanized cores outside of SF, NY, and CHI where would Seattle rank?

It is very built up with mid rise chunkiness in some of those neighborhoods. I from these pics it looks like it could give LA, Philly, and Boston a run for its money. Those must be some really dense census tracts, LA would beat it because the hoods just west of DT are packed full of immigrants crammed in with higher occupancy per unit.

Very impressed with these shots. Similar to how a forumer just displayed the inner density of Atlanta in his latest thread.

Seattle still has more gaps than the top cities, and the density doesn't keep going like Philly for example. But it's moving in their direction at a high rate. Some areas, like much of Capitol Hill and First Hill, are already pretty cohesive high-density over a large area.

Our buildings tend to have more units than the same shape building would have in a lot of cities. Parking is underground, and typically moderate ratios like 0.8 or 0.6 in core districts, or zero. Typical units tend to be small for a variety of reasons...I'm referring to typical market rate units, but we also have a couple thousand "micro" units of various kinds in the current boom.

The top census tracts in 2010 were densities of 50k and 40k with a couple thirty-somethings. Most core districts will gain substantially by 2015 based on a ton of construction since then.

Wow. A kick ass thread. Too bad that the weather in Seattle sucks 364 out of 365 days. ;-)

Thanks for sharing.

I had a chance to go to the reception hall atop the Smith Tower several years ago. At the time a family actually lived in the crown above the reception hall -- perhaps they still do. Could you imagine living up there?

If you ever get a chance to go into the building you'll also get a serious kick out of the elevators.

Yes they still live there. There was a feature story in the Seattle Times not too long ago, but you need a subscription.

Love the observation deck.
