KC Districts Part 1 - The East Bottoms

Ok everybody!! After a four month hietus, I am back in action. I've got a whole new project lined up for everyone to see. Actually it's a work in progress but I'm off to a good start.

When I first started posting threads about a year ago, my intention was to try to get as many cities in and around the Kansas City area. I initially avoided Kansas City itself because I felt there was enough threads being posted without my contributions being necessary. However, most of these threads obviously focused on Downtown, Crown Center, the Plaza, and the Westport area, and rightly so. There is so much going on in these areas that it would be hard not to want to show them.

I work for an office supply delivery company that takes me all over the city. Last fall I was reassigned to cover some areas that I've never been to in my 37 years of living here, and I started to have a change of heart. I was also inspired by the neighborhoods that were being covered in other cities such as Pittsburgh PA, NYC-NJ area, San Antonio, and most recently, St. Louis. I decided that there were so many neighborhood districts in Kansas City, that I wanted to give a sampling of them for people to see. I had quite a lot of fun taking these pictures and can't wait to get them up on this site.

This first thread is kind of a warm up thread. I posted a map to show the area where it's located. (red). The East Bottoms is a dictrict that at first glance appears to be very gritty and in a very sad state of decline, bad economy not withstanding. However that's not necessarily the case. This area is very much alive. Quite a few manufacturing companies and warehouses are located down here. While the residential neighborhoods have seen better days, it is not a dangerous place to be. Most people keep to themselves down here. I figured it was best however to stay in my car and not do too much walking around. This is not a long thread, but it is quite interesting to say the least. Sorry for all the rambling. Let's enjoy a few pics.

I think this is a water treatment plant. It kind of looks like an old school.

This was an old catholic school!!

This was also part of it.

This building was also on the property!!

The name of this little greasy spoon is Tommy Boy's Cafe. They have some pretty good pie here!!

This gas station has been vacant for as long as I can remember!!

This is a pretty louse picture, but we are looking southwest towards downtown!!

A very nice biker bar!!

Looking out towards the east.

The leaning tower of........my idiodic inability to hold my camara steady while inside my car!!

Thanks everyone!! I will not be long before I post the next set!! I hope you enjoy the Kansas City District/Neighborhood series!!

Quite an attracting tour, actually. There is definitely a sense of depression and desolation that drew me in to these photos. Thanks for documenting this area that, by the looks of it, is seldom seen.

That church doesn't look that old. I am amazed no one reused it after it was vacated.

That's 'Knuckleheads', which was voted best blues club last year by the national blues society. The industrial setting of the E Bottoms is a perfect locale for blues. You however missed the coolest thing around the E Bottoms - the railyards!

I figured this picture would suffice!! I might add that Union Pacific and K.C. Southern are very dominate down here!! BNSF I believe stays in Kansas City, Kansas!!

Thanks for the info about Knuckleheads. I had no idea that it was such a hot place to watch blues bands play. I always liked to go to Be Be's BBQ off of 85th and Troost. That was a good place to go!!

thanks for taking the time to document this area...these industrial fringe areas are fascinating. Unfortunately, I think this area is a sort of environmental "free fire" zone for the industry down there. I can't remember if this area had one dominant omni-present industrio-chem odor like many similar areas in midwest cities have, being much below the grade of the main city and the northend.

this seems like the prefect place for one of those kansas city quasi-illegal quasi-bars which I wish we had more of here in St. Louis.

Don't want to hijack your thread but here's a few of mine. If I'm hijacking, pm me and I'll remove. I used to hike the rails all over KC - particularly tripped out on the journey from Argentine yards, to the W bottoms, through downtown and into the E bottoms. KC and Chicago are the two largest freight railcenters in the US. Here are some of my adventures..

E Bottoms railyards, which is actually one of the smaller ones in the metro. The treeline in the middle is a bluff that separates the E bottoms from the NE Side.

on me way from n of downtown to the e bottoms...

someone tell this dude sid vicious is dead...

i managed to get on top of this bridge before torn down...

humming his horn, in harmony with burlington northern, rips into moten swing, lester'd be proud..

freaked out very very badly, freaked out on acid, i'm the white rabbit

for the old man of letters, embalmed in cats and roses

no more fvcked up than the king of amerika

up the bluff from the e bottoms..

Yet another outpost of the third world in our own country. We've seen a lot of those pictures on this thread. God bless America and our capitalism!

it was a common style in late 1800s made from limestones. most did not last though as they didn't have a good method for a solid foundation. there is also a handful of public buildings in that style, like this old prison/workhouse...

Desolation Row photography. When the camera is as good as this one, it's as good as being there. But would I want to be there? Not for long, but for five minutes or so, an interesting jaunt to someplace else.
