Giant concrete slab falls at Montreal's aging Olympic Stadium

Giant concrete slab falls at Montreal's aging Olympic Stadium

A giant concrete block fell Sunday from the ceiling of an underground parking facility in Montreal's Olympic Stadium.

The city's fire department said no one was injured but they are concerned there could be more problems now that the structure has been weakened.

A security guard spotted the fallen slab — measuring eight by 12 metres — shortly after 3 p.m. and alerted emergency officials.

The incident at the old home of the Montreal Expos is the latest sign of the city's crumbling infrastructure.

It comes two weeks before the Montreal Impact is scheduled to play its first Major League Soccer game at the stadium.

Team spokesman Patrick Vallee said since the collapse was not inside the stadium the March 17th game against the Chicago Fire would go ahead as planned.

Because things that break in Québec are considered National News and must be posted immediately!! You don't even have to provide a source.

Things that break in other provinces are considered local news and best kept secret. Although that could change..

Unless they're in Toronto, of course.

This keeps happening . Sooner or later they're going to have to either completely rebuild the O or tear it down . I mean , if just one person is crushed by a falling slab of concrete then it's game over . As it stands right now , I'm not sure I'd feel very good about going into the building myself .

Otherwise I'll say that with such an iconic building , whatever the expense , it would be worth it .

Your genuine concern is heartwarming Gdoggy!

Fortunately, the builders of the OPG building, Gardiner Expressway as well as members of the Falling Glass Emergency Task Force, Cascading Brick Response Unit, Tumbling Marble Quick Reaction Squad and Giant Sinkhole Demarcation Team are all flying in from Toronto to aid us in this time of crisis. The TTC has even set up a 24 hour hotline to advise us on how to deal with any lengthy disruptions in subway service!

It's great to have so many experienced people we can call upon whenever there's an emergency.

The bodies encased in the concrete finally decomposed enough to weaken the structural integrity

AFAIK a lot of Montreal's infastructure was rushed out to accomodate the Olympics and Expo 67.

Sounds like Montreal has a lot of very expensive work in it's future to renovate and upgrade lots of buildings and infrastructure.

Thank God nobody was injured or even killed. Why does it have to involve concrete and Quebec is either sheer coincidence, or a higher power is manipulating this region.
