This is what I'm drinking tonight - Smashbomb Atomic IPA from Flying Monkey Brewery in Barrie, ON.

I've had this stuff before several times, but this is the first time I've decided to buy a 6-pack of it.

Quite a nice IPA - very hoppy in taste for an American IPA, but that's a quality I often like in any IPA. For those wondering how strong it is, it's 6%.

Winnipeg Beer News

Winter is coming/a $200 beer lands

With a staggering retail price of $166.41 (plus taxes), your average beer drinker won't be picking up a bottle of the Utopias, but rest assured the 30 bottles coming into the province (27 are going to the Grant Park Liquor Mart, while three are off to Brandon) will sell out quickly. The first time Utopias came into the province only six bottles arrived, and they didn't really even make it on to the shelves.

As you'll see, there are a number of different brews and finishing techniques that go into the Utopias, and the alcohol by volume is a whopping 28 per cent. So no, you don't fill up a pint glass with the stuff — rather, you'd serve it like you might a cognac, brandy or single-malt scotch (hold the ice cubes).

In 2012 only 54 barrels of the Utopias was made - they made about 100 this year, hence the increase in number of bottles coming. It comes in a kettle-shaped ceramic bottle, and (at least in the case of the 2012) with a specially designed glass created by Austrian wine-glass producer Riedel.

Never had a chance to sample the Utopias, but here's hoping..

Recently grabbed a 12 bottle sampler pack of Granville Island Brewery. It's pretty good beer. I'd buy it again.

I like to drink IPA's, stouts, and spiced beers in winter. My favorite Canadian ones are Muskoka Mad Tom's IPA; St-Ambroise Oatmeal Stout, and darn tartan scotch ale... yum! I also like to sip a glass or two of fin du monde, or maudite... if I feel like hallucinating, hah!

I recently bought the limited edition of city and color maple beer from flying monkeys... for $19! It was meh....

In summer, lagers for sure. Too many to list.

My "go-to" cheap Canadian beer; if I'm not worried about taste... as long as it's colder than ice; has always been Kokanee. It tastes like nuts and straw. Good times! If I want to spend a tad more; I'll buy local - mostly Charlie Flints from Alley Kat. Can't buy those in a 50 pack though

Protip! My favorite non-canadian beer for drinking in the winter... which you should check out immediately.. is lagunitas IPA.

What I'm drinking right now: Russian Gun Imperial Stout by Grand River Brewing. A very smokey--peaty?--strong brew that is gonna knock me out soon.

Big Beer is getting smaller.

New figures out of the United States show that some of the continent’s most familiar brands are over a barrel. Budweiser, Miller, Michelob Lite, and Heineken all lost significant market share in recent years as promiscuous consumers took their thirst elsewhere.

Sales of nine top brands, taken together, dropped a remarkable 25 per cent in volume between 2007 and 2012 in the United States versus a 2.3-per-cent dip for the overall beer market, according to Beer Marketer’s Insights, a Suffern, N.Y.-based trade newsletter that tracks the market. Chief among the losers was one-time powerhouse Budweiser, the self-styled “King of Beers.” At one time the No. 1 brew in America but now in third place, Bud retreated by 6.8 million barrels, or 796 million litres, in the period, a 28.8-per-cent plunge.

...

“There’s a lot of exciting things happening in the beer category and a lot of innovation taking place,” said Luke Harford, president of Beer Canada, a trade association representing 26 companies that account for 90 per cent of beer brewed in this country. Harford notes there were 400 unique brands available in Canada in 1990. Today the number’s well over 2,000 when limited-run seasonal products and craft brews are included. “People like to talk about [the market] as flat. It’s flat but very vibrant.”

Had some kind of cream ale from vancouver in the pub near where my wife is hospitalized the other day. It was the special and I can't remember the name but if I hear it again I'm sure I'd remember it. Was good anyway.

Tonight it's all about Quidi Vidi Honey Brown, baby.

Also... I quit smoking for three years. Started up again a few months ago (went on a few dates with a smoker... damn it)... but I quit again this week. Fifth day today. And I'm on the gum/Vapur.

^ Quidi Vidi Honey Brown, mmmm.. nice choice, I'm still trying to quit, wish you the best of luck with it.

A monopoly, LCBO. Is it the pricing or the selection? Just curious about how people feel in the East, being from Manitoba, with our MLCC?

Ooh, I posted my Honey Brown? I never remember doing these things...

I'm still not smoking. Three or four weeks now? I lost count.

Tonight:

Storm... yum! Beer perfection. My favourite ever.

Innis & Gunn is great.

And Quidi Vidi Brewery's seasonal Winter Ale.
