The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has released this year’s list of the 100 most congested roadways and the top three are in Dallas County.

Dang, #3 is Central Expressway, the part that was recently rebuilt a little more than 10 years ago.

What I hate most about these stats is that D/FW not only has the three most congested roadways, but it also has the most aggressive rail policies of any city in the Southern US (LA not being considered "South"). That means that for all the light rail they've built, it's not helping to relieve congestion And the top three cause SIGNIFICANTLY more delay than the most congested arteries in Houston... 100,000 delay hours more.

As the metros are of similar size, what's being done in Houston that's not being done up in D/FW?

LBJ Frwy (I-635) segment between 35E Stemmons Frwy and 75 Central Expwy is second on the list. Since its construction some 40 years ago, LBJ Freeway has become one of the most congested and crowded roadways in the nation. This survey was completed 12/31/2010 prior to the start of the new construction of the freeway, imagine for the next five years of even more congestion. Here is the new look for the mammoth new project LBJ Express.

Maybe it's the layout of DFW. You get stuck in traffic in random spots because people live/work all over the place. In Houston, you know which freeways will be backed up at what time and direction. That, and Houston has better secondary road networks than DFW does (but DFW is pretty good on secondary roads though). There are many expansions, both on the Dallas and FW side, going on right now though.
