Kumbh Mela - The Largest Gathering on Earth (NSFW)

On from Varanasi, I travelled to Allahabad, India to catch part of the month long festival of Kumbh Mela. The festival occurs every three years, however the Kumbh Mela that I visited, Maha Kumbh Mela, only occurs every 144 years. That meant more people and bigger and larger spiritual events.

Various activities occured on set days during the run of the festival. There were several bathing days where pilgrims from all over the world would come to bathe in the Ganges. Typically, Allahabad is a city of just over one million people. During the busiest bathing day, nearly 40 million people flooded the festival grounds and take turns washing in the holy waters of the Ganges.

To accommodate the crowd, a temporary city was built with basic utilities and tents, many of which were occupied by Hindu holy men - babas or sadhus. These men have chosen a distinct path towards enlightenment. Most were naked and many practice yoga or perform acts that push their bodies to the physical limits. A few that I met: a man that had not spoken in 20 years, a man that never put his arm below his head, a man that never sat down, a man that ate the meat of dead human bodies, a man that never went to the bathroom (this man was actually dead but his followers swore to vishnu he never went). Most of the sadhus smoke a lot of hash, sometimes they would become very playful and friendly, sometimes they would become fiercely angry and violent.

It would take pages of text for me to convey my experience at the festival so I'll try to sum it up, there were elements of college stoner culture, intense religious fervor, circus like sideshows, all mixed on top of India's wild and diverse culture.

As the title states, this thread has a lot of male nudity so you probably don't want to view this w/ your mom or at work. Ok, on to the greatest show on earth.

Thanks for taking a look. That wraps up Kumbh Mela, hope to catch the next one in a few years. Next stop, the deserts and lakes of Rajasthan.

Are those dead bodies in the background?!

I'm curious - isn't India super conservative about nudity and what not? I'm surprised by all the naked men walking about. What's the story behind this?

Great set, beautiful photography, but I've got to admit...I don't think this place is going to be on on my top 5 list anytime soon.

Weird and wonderful.
Love the multitude of faces you find in India.

Great pictures.

Some of the nude pictures are crazy. The one of the guy holding himself up is funny. He's in the air, and then his balls are hanging out in plain sight. The one of the guy with the machete in his dick is insane.

unfukkinbelievable

I read a travelogue book about India once where the author stated something to effect of: "we think we are so free in the West; but with our expectations of what is "normal", "acceptable", "controllable", we place fairly rigid limits on the range of our freedom, experiences, and imagination . . . whereas in India very little is normal or controllable, so people are used to tolerating a vastly greater breadth of experience on any given day than Westerners do.

Specifically, he observed that in India no one would bat an eye should a cavalcade of raging, machete-brandishing, nude bearded men come galloping down the street. Imagine the shock its equivalent would induce in the streets of London, NY, LA or Paris (let alone Peoria or Topeka).

Outstanding shots, as usual!

I´ve enjoyed the high quality of every picture and all the people shots. Excellent job! That festival of Kumbh Mela must be an unforgettable experience for the rest of your life, sure.

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain.

40 million in one place? That's incomprehensible for me.

Outstanding info and presentation. Thanks OK.

Holy crap what an experience that must have been. A hippie's dream and then some. Running naked in the streets, that takes balls! (pun intended)

India looks absolutely incredible. Have you ever done a set on the US outside of Denver? I'd be very intrigued to see your take on anywhere in the country.

a stunning set of photos, we are lucky to be able to check out your photos of this extreme event.

I feel bad for the river, and for the kids though - must be scary to deal with so much lunatic behavior in adults.

thanks!

destroycreate - those are just effigies that were used for some religious purpose and then tossed out. As far as the naked men, they are naga babas, men that are fairly high up in their sect. They are usually solitary and live all over India and Nepal, they congregate for the Melas.

xzmattzx - yeah, dude with the sword might take the cake for craziest act of devotion. I saw that on my first day... knew I was in for a ride.

CroBurnham - It's a funny observation. Indians are very liberal with regards to certain facets of life, yet are hard line conservatives regarding things like women's rights.

Yorkie - I took about 3,000 at the festival and kept around 1,200. Of the 1,200 I posted roughly 120. The photo shoots with the babas burned a lot of shots.

NF - Ha, I don't think I fairly covered Denver back in the day. I was pretty green back then. Um, no other photo threads inside the US. I will have one in NY sometime. Most of my spare time is spent editing shots from my travels so I don't want to add more to the pile right now.

Everyone else, appreciate the comments.
