Concordia MO and a couple of others..in the Fall

1. Lexington, MO... in the Fall

As a few of you know me by now, I like to do my threads in series. This one is no exception. However, Lexington, Concordia, and the next thread coming up were all taken last year. I had always desired to do some photothreads with an Autumn theme. At the time I took these pictures, I had sold my house and was temporarily living with a friend until I found my next house, so I waited to post these. It's still a work in progress. I have since gone out and taken more pictures of towns east of Kansas City, and I plan to go out some more in the next week so as long as the weather cooperates.

Concordia, is a small town in eastern Lafayette County, just 50 miles outside of Kansas City on I-70. The town has a mostly German heritage, with a large concentration of Lutherans, and its own Lutheran high school.

The population of Concordia increased to 2,450, according to the 2010 Census.

Not an overly impressive building stock, and some grit, but most buildings are being used.

I don't believe the church is vacant..hopefully some repair work being done on the windows.

I tried to do as much research on this school as I could, but still not sure if this is the Lutheran High School or a branch of the St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City. It is a beautiful campus that can be seen from I-70.

Odessa is a town that is about 30 miles from Kansas City along i-70. One of my best friends, who is like a brother to me, lives here with his family. The population has risen to 5,300, according to the 2010 Census.

These tracks go right by my old house, just 15 miles west of here.

Like Concordia, the building stock isn't impressive, but most of them are occupied.

On the outskirts of town, there was an enormous strip mall built for outlet stores which seemed to be all the rage back in the mid 90s. Most are gon now with a few stores remaining.

Nice pictures. Interesting that there's an abandoned outlet mall here. I wonder if that will be a signature remnant of the 1990s/2000s. We have an outlet mall in Wilmington, right on the Riverfront, that has pretty much failed from the start.

I believe you're right about that. I remember when the outlet mall first opened in Odessa, Nearly every space was occupied. Then after a few years, it dropped off considerably. A grocery store is about the only thing that is doing decent now. In Lawrence Kansas, there were two of them. One was kind of a mall in downtown that overlooked the Kansas Riverfront. it's now just a medical / professional building. Also in the late 90s, The Great Mall of the Great Plains opened in Olathe Kansas, a large suburb in the KC metro area, and it was huge at first, but now the mall is less than half full. Plus, the anchor tenants were not big department stores like JC Penny or Macys, but stores like Burlington Coat Factory, some offspin of Dick's Sporting Goods, and a movie theater. I guess it was a 90s thing.
