I've been digging up old songs for another thread but, as always, watching the latest releases from the big bands here. So a bit of an update with the latest singles here, including a couple of hits.

Hey Rosetta!'s newest video, officially released today. It's a 7-minute experience filmed in a little church in Seldom-Come-By, on Fogo Island, Newfoundland.

I probably heard of Winnipeg twice in my life before moving there. Both among multiple choice answers on tests at school.

And now, the connections are just... endless. I was living there when the St. John's Ice Caps became the farm team for the returned Winnipeg Jets.

And now, it turns out, our darlings The Fortunate Ones performed at the famous Winnipeg Folk Festival (held in a HUGE park near the city; it's one of the cultural events of the year in Winnipeg. People plan their vacations around it and everything).

The gorgeous Catherine Allan and her beau, who together are known as The Fortunate Ones, and their hit single The Bliss - all about the importance of savouring the sadness in your life to appreciate the happiness.

The album was recorded at a new studio at Echo Lake, Nova Scotia (though they're, obviously, from here). They mentioned it in a video. I did some research and asked around. It's a thing now. It's THE thing. Everyone here wants their shit recorded at Echo Lake. It's become the most prestigious place to get it done, instantly. Apparently it's a wickedly awesome setup and experience.

Video is recorded in Bonavista, St. John's, and the TCH in between.

I love the Downtownie girls who keep that British tradition of too much make-up going. It's the look that appeals to me most. If this was 30 years ago and I had to have a beard, that's what I'd be after.

One of the hits from a George Street queen's debut album. After entertaining crowds here for years, she finally put out her own. Jazzy pop singer, gorgeous voice.

Yeah, the rule is there so people's browsers (like mine or others who are viewing the site on mobile phones) don't crash. It's just courtesy. Adobe hasn't figured out how to economise their Flash video players yet.

So, Great Big Sea is effectively broken up according to the press coverage here last week.

Gaahhh... you will never understand how much I hate that they're the band that went international from here.

But anyhow, lead singer Alan Doyle's solo project is out.

Holy Hole Inna Donut was really fun. I'm all pursed lips seat dancing in my room. But it's fine. No one can beat me up here.

Dad used to sing this to me. His version was better... but it's still one of my favourites of the stupid, modern, story-based folks songs that I never share.

And I'm not kidding. I'll post the older Newfoundland/Irish shit. But not the 1950s+ crap. Elie's on the Weed and all that shit. It's all welfare Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer. And I hate that Kentucky style of folk music.

Half an hour later, on an island in the sea
She may be late, but she's still great
She means the world to me

When God designed Creation
And drew up His master plan
He spent half an hour more creatin' Newfoundland

Somebody just predicted that Judgement Day is here
This very day, at midnight, the world will disappear
Me wife looked at me lovingly and said, "Now, ain't that grand?"
"We get half an hour more 'cause we're in Newfoundland"
