Oh that's just me and the old folks. I LOVE folk music. I was in Newfoundland folk dancing.

A few years ago, a Montreal DJ by the name of Ramasutra did a version of the same song for a Quebec movie called Camping Sauvage:

The reason these guys knew about it is likely because it was first made popular in the 60s by this singer:

I wonder if he knows the context of that song. Madeleine Chartrand certainly didn't.

(Sorry, I've been doing quite a bit of research on old Canadian tunes lately.)

The song is a prayer, a mourning for their dependent status (Post-Treaty of Montreal). The spirit-man they are waiting for is someone who will lift them from their dependence.

Thanks. I knew it was a prayer but did not know the rest.

I couldn't find The Fall as a separate video, but Protosleep's latest album is up in its entirety. It's a great album - amateur, of course, as this genre isn't big here, but still great. It's a good one to play while you're relaxing at home.

As I've said, not usually a fan of men's singing voices. I can tolerate all of them but there aren't many that really grab me. This is another of the exceptions. Waterfront Fire's vocals are often at an odd volume compared to everything else in their songs - but his voice is just so clear and engaging. Love it.

This one is like a time warp when it comes on the radio. The song is over and you're suddenly home and can't remember any of the route you drove.

Two of my favourites - The Once and Amelia Curran - have been nominated for a Juno. Curran's same album was also named by NPR as one of the best American Folk albums of 2014.

The new are nominated for Traditional Album of the Year in the group and solo categories respectively.

Music Newfoundland and Labrador's nominations gala is tomorrow at 11 a.m. on George Street.

Misunderstood yesterday's annoucement. We are hosting the whole East Coast Music Awards this year. That's the gala happening right now on George Street - MusicNL is announcing the nominees for those awards.

Seeing her name mentioned in the press has me back on an Amelia Curran kick today. Loves her.

This is probably one of the few songs "about" Montreal by a Newfoundlander.

Live sample, just to give you a taste of what she's like at The Ship:

Video Link

And the full song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-AxeNhBT6M

Lyrics:

Quote:
Now that your darlin' keeps you home
There goes the best war we've ever had
Now that nobody's all alone
We'll turn forgiveness to forget

If you're in town you'll look me up
And dance the days into the cups
And you will talk of golden river flow
And given you enough

Bye, bye, years
Of deals and dolls
Bye, bye, Montreal

What wicked patterns we succumb
From the warnings we have run
Now from a figure we have cut the mould
And filled the stadium

If in as many years I call
From the middle of it all
Will you forgive me or forget
who we were ever born at all
