Newfoundland - Saltwater Joys [78 images]

Summer. Well, May, June and July. There's one St. John's photo mixed in here as filler, but I think it fits. This place grows on you. The music grows on you. Sitting in the bar in Rocky Harbour drinking pints and listening to Anchors Away. Laughing and singing along. It's a Newfoundland thing. It sinks into your bones like the cold and mist and drizzle.

Some Portugal Cove, some Bell Island, some Gros Morne, some Bay Bulls, some Ferryland. Quite a few from the random photos thread, but enough new stuff to not completely waste your time.

The music is Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers.

Those are great. Beautiful stuff.

So Irises actually grow wild in Canada? I know they're indigenous to the mountains in China, but I didn't realize they could survive temperatures of that extreme. They do well here. It's almost like they prefer the dry, heat and sun. They thrive in it.

The blue irises are smaller and a native species. There's a larger yellow one that's an invasive species taking over in places. The blues ones are quite wide spread. I've seen a lot down by Cape Spear and a lot in Gros Morne. Almost everywhere really. But it's a late season. That photo was taken July 21st.

Newfoundland's winter is pretty moderate (it's just the precipitation that's extreme and sinks into your bones). The average lows in January for the Avalon Peninsula are only about -7 (25ish) or so and the highs near 0 (32F). It's colder on the West side of the province.

Magnificent! These are really fantastic and convey such a strong sense of the place.

Very nice! I especially like the one of the dories, also the old buildings, rocks, sunsets, the fisherman, etc. etc. They all sort of tell a story.
