One could also ask WTF is going on with the Federal Liberals, they had a decent leader who was PM material in Ignatieff, and they preferred JT instead and now as a result he's doing substantial damage to quality of life everywhere in Canada.

We have irrefutable evidence that JT is wreaking absolute carnage on the Canadian economy, and causing untold despair upon the nation's youth, most of whom have now lost hope of ever owning a home or starting a family, and, JTs solution to all this is to artificially inflate the economy by importing millions of immigrants from the third world, and to wrecklessly spend billions of dollars on questionable new federal government programs which will put us all into penury within 10-15 years because of crippling debt servicing payments.

In the next election, the choice will be "more of the same" with JT (a recipe for disaster), or the distasteful PP. At the very least we can say that PP is not JT. That's enough for me.......

On the economy I think we are going to have to come back in 10 years are see where we are in retrospect.

The feds industrial policy has been focused on transitioning Ontario auto industry to clean tech. It has focused on financing green projects across the country and building a pipline for Alberta. Developing a hydrogen export industry for NFLD. These were choices the conservatives would not have made. We will need to come back in 10 year and see if the feds made the correct decisions or not.

Housing is clearly multi-faceted. Quebec and Alberta cities don't have the same issues as Toronto and Vancouver. Something is happening in Toronto and Vancouver, realtors and mortgage brokers look to be worried. Normally two groups I don't particularly trust. Sounds like the economics for the private sector does not work for new construction. Given the cost of labour, interest rates and the "depressed" price that houses sell for that are fewer housing starts. Something is got to give.

As for the sentiment in the general population, inflation has stabilised and interest rates are poised to come down.

Yes, the feds have tightened up student visa. There will be less foreign students going forward.

The question is would a Conservative, PP government had done better. It is not clear they would.

Honest to god, at this point the proverbial houseplant option is looking good to me.

I think anyone would have done better, including PP and a houseplant. The massive increase in immigration and foreign students that has torched the economy and the quality of life of millions of Canadians was not announced in advance, not in the election platform, not studied by Parliament, not recommended by the bureaucracy. It was apparently just a brain fart by the PM.

I think the capital gains changes will also be part of the calculus as well. All of a sudden it will be a lot more expensive to sell any assets. If you are a large company investing in real estate, this could have a big impact on your bottom line. Maybe it would make more sense to invest your money in a different part of the economy, or, offshore.

Dunno about the rest of you, but I would absolutely vote for a houseplant before casting my vote for Peevish Polyester or True Doh.

Ignatieff wasn't PM material. He proved that when he led one of the most successful political parties in the western world to its worst defeat in history, losing his own seat in what should have been a safe Liberal riding. I don't remember a single instance where he demonstrated strong leadership or a creative approach to policy. He was arrogant, open to easy attack ("just visiting!") and personally unlikeable.

For all of Trudeau's faults, I'm not sure anyone else could've won 2015 for the Liberals. Of course, the fact that Mulcair shot himself repeatedly in the foot certainly helped.

If you don't like Ignatieff, then how about Stéphane Dion? By today's standards (Pierre Poilievre, Justin Trudeau, Donald Trump) he's clearly-above-average PM material too. Yet the Libs didn't keep him!

Exactly. At least with a potted plant we'd have avoided the damage. Not that I'm personally complaining about the Scheme of Great Enrichment, obviously, but I can still recognize that skyrocketing homelessness, while great (for real estate portfolio owners), has downsides too.

One real eye-opener for me was when the media reported a couple weeks ago that every single penny from the GST now goes into the black hole of interest on the federal debt -- the entirety of what's collected via the GST doesn't even cover the interest on the debt.

And, it's just gonna get worse.

Another fun fact, the feds now spend more to service the debt than they do on health care, including health transfers to the provinces.

Is that good value for your money JT???

Canada’s output per capita, a measure of standard of living, plummets

The decline amounts to roughly $4,200 per person, according to a new report by Statistics Canada.

April 26, 2024
By Ana Pereira
Staff Reporter

Real output per capita has fallen to seven per cent below its long-term trend since the pandemic, resulting in a decline of roughly $4,200 per person, according to a new report by Statistics Canada.

To reverse the trend, GDP per capita, a metric used by economists together with other economic indicators to evaluate a country’s standard of living, would need to grow at an average yearly rate of 1.7 per cent, authors Carter McCormack and Weimin Wang found.

That figure is close to the expansion in GDP per capita seen in the U.S., which swiftly recovered from pandemic economic lags and currently ranks as the most productive country in the G7, according to RBC.

Meanwhile, GDP per capita in Canada has plummeted to levels observed in 2017 based on historical data from 1981 until 2023.

Of course Canada's standards of living are plummetting. Not exactly fresh news at this point

We had an acceleration of people leaving the workforce during COVID.

The US going down a path of brining manufacturing back home (from China and other parts). We should be doing the same.

And the other countries didn't get COVID, we're the only one that did. That's why we're the only developed country seeing such substantial declines in standard of living. Logical explanation!

Actually the G7 with the exception of the US, has a remarkable similar pattern.
https://www.statista.com/statistics/...ls-per-capita/

The US has charted a completely different course. One focused on massive borrowing and investment in the green economy. With these battery plants the Canadian feds are trying to match what the US is doing to attract some manufacturing while at the same time avoiding the borrowing that would be involved to fully match the US plan. The conservatives are obviously against even that minimum measure.

What is the Conservative Party on?

Carney must testify because why?

Statement seems to miss the point that Chretien and Martin Liberals were better than any CONservative government as far as finances are concerned.

Mark being the PM leader would be a nightmare for Pierre - he knows it... MUST TESTIFY - what a joke.

These are, I take it, rhetorical questions?
