YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio - Greene-r pastures

In September, I moved from the Texas Gulf Coast to Ohio. Shortly after getting here, I took this walk around the Village of Yellow Springs in Greene County, east of Dayton, between Springfield and Xenia (two towns I will get to soon).

This place has only a few thousand people but has a long history of civil rights, left-wing politics and such which Greene County as a whole - it's home to Wright-Patterson AFB and lots of military personnel - is not known for. It was intended to be a utopian community.

It was one of the final stops of the Underground Railroad, a target of Red Scare communist-hunting in the 1950s, a center of civil rights and Vietnam War protest in the 60s and 70s. All in the unlikeliest of places.

Enough talk. Time for photos. Let's begin.

Just remember, if you come across a sign that points to ice cream in one direction and a brewery in another, that you can't make a wrong turn.

It's a bit of Vermont in suburban Dayton. Thanks.

This town of Yellow Springs is simply awesome, though I´ve never visited it, but simply watching your pictures, jfre81... It looks very confortable and quaint.

Love the high quantity of nature around the town.

Thanks for sharing and greetings from Madrid, Spain.

As an graduate of Antioch College (early 60s!) I appreciated your brief tour of Yellow Springs. It was a very exciting place in the 60s, however we hardly considered it the home of WP-AFB - whose major function was to provide a site for protest. The best parts, beside the college, were the Glen and Friday night folk dancing in Red Square.

It's not, but Greene County is. Just to provide the context of the area outside Yellow Springs. Very different.
