Lincoln, officially known as Lincoln City, is an unincorporated community in Sussex County, south of Milford. The population is around 500.

Lincoln was built on the Junction & Breakwater Railroad, and was laid out in 1865. The founder envisioned a large city, and surveyed wide streets for substantial growth.

Residents of Lincoln have debated the topic of incorporating. A limited-access freeway has been proposed for central Sussex County, and would go right through the Lincoln area after bypassing Milford to the north. Incorporation would allow the community to have a say on where the expressway goes, as opposed to the county deciding everything. Incorporation would also be a solution to encroaching suburbanization from Milford.

This thread is the seventh in "A dozen states in a dozen threads" series. Up next, the state that was the birthplace of four Presidents and the site of one Presidential inauguration.

Not sure of the exact reason, really. I guess because it was nothing special, really. A community at a random stretch of any old railroad in the middle of nowhere in Delaware isn't the best path towards growth.
