Roanoke, VA - Last Leg of the Tri-Cities Trip

As I headed home after visiting the Tri- cities, Asheville, and some relatives in Southwestern Virginia, I decided to hit Lynchburg. However, I ran into a brutal thunderstorm in Roanoke and changed plans. I spent the night there and explored that city's downtown the next morning before heading back to Maryland.

I'd been to Roanoke (pop ~ 100,000 metro ~ 300,000) once before for a short walk-about, and knew I'd missed a lot of downtown. Lots of great old buildings in the city. There was a ton of rehab/renovation going all all over downtown. I hope they're successful. Unfortunately my camera battery died about 2/3 of the way through this tour. . It was an early Wednesday morning, and for the most part overcast.
Here's some more info about Roanoke (the place was originally named Big Lick):

When I was in Roanoke a few years back, I was impressed with it's downtown & charming residential districts. Looks like they continue to move forward with downtown.

Your pictures do a nice job of featuring the beautiful scenery surrounding the city, too.

Very good job!

Quite an interesting city. I did find the building on the right in the following photo to be somewhat out of place regarding its facade:

Nice pictures. Roanoke has a nice little bit of density in its Downtown.

Nice photos! Roanoke looks a bit sleepy, but the architecture is really nice.

Much more impressive than I imagined. A friend of mine traveled through Roanoke recently for a job interview and she didn't give the city a great review. She obviously isn't an architecture buff. Great photos, thanks!

I love how the apartment dweller in picture 75 has their own little garden spot there.

^ Yeah hh, I thought that was pretty cool.

@ BigKidD, I wanted to make sure I included that building in the pic, it's so out of place.

Thanks to all you rascals for the comments, they're appreciated.

Wow, I had no idea that Roanoke was a biggish city with an awesome looking and healthy downtown. Whoda thunk it? Thanks for the tour.

Many don't realize that Roanoke is the center of a huge (land-wise) market area that covers Southwest Virginia, western Virginia, and big chunks of West Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina.

You'll see lots of country folks "going to town" in Roanoke on a Saturday morning, plus its the only cultural, medical, entertainment, and shopping area for miles around.

Pretty impressive city, both building-wise and the natural surroundings (minus the Gehry looking building)

Great tour.

Like many cities, a mix of wonderfully preserved historic streetscapes, and lamentable urban renewal bloopers. Looks like there is a lot of good stuff in Roanoke, in addition to a nice natural setting. It's on my list of places to visit.

I heart Roanoke. Great outdoor summer concerts. Wonderful people. Awesome job on the photos. Did you make a pit stop in the New River Valley?
