Great little city. Definitely one of the nicest places along I-81 in Va.

@PhotoLith- Yes, many of the towns along the I-81 corridor in Virginia have well-preseved and surprisingly vibrant downtowns, Roanoke's is by far the largest and nicest. Hmm...I see a good idea for a photothread project for myself, if I can ever get vacation time...

I had a job in Staunton, VA the month before I went to Roanoke. I took the family, and had to spend two days during the day doing work, so I didn't have much time for walking around and exploring with my camera. But we did get a good walk in, and some photos (maybe I will post them one day). That town is really cool. The downtown is a compact, dense, and filled with historic lowrise buildings. I could live in a western VA town, right next to the blue ridges in a historic small city. I love Virginia cities. Charlottesville is another great one. I am still waiting to get to see Blacksburg.

Nice set, the only time I've been near Roanoke is while driving up I-81. This thread proves that its definitely worth stopping for a day the next time I'm up that way.

I spent a little time in Roanoke about 10 years and was impressed with it's "bones". I'm glad they've preserved them. Lot's of potential.

I have been up and down I-81 many times but never stopped in Roanoke. Perhaps next time I should. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting. Interesting! My family landed and settled in Tinker Creek way back in the 1700's. I cannot wait to go see the place now that I know that tidbit.

Thank you everybody for your comments. Yes, I agree that the Wells Fargo Building leaves a lot to be desired even if it is Roanoke's highest building. The mountains outside of it make the city. I really wish I would have stopped in Blacksburg through on my way down to Asheville. That photo thread will be next eventually.

A friend of mine interviewed for a teaching position near Roanoke. She was not impressed, but, then again, she is indifferent about architecture. Roanoke looks like it has some nice buildings to me. Great photos, thanks!
