Avalon, CA (Catalina Island)

Avalon, CA (pop 3,728)

Located about 22 miles south of Long Beach, Santa Catalina Island is one of the eight Channel Islands off the coast of California and one of two,
along with San Clemente Island, within Los Angeles County. Avalon is the only incorporated city on any of the eight islands (though Catalina also has a community of about 300,
Two Harbors, on the north part of the island). Avalon is primarily a tourist and resort town and its small size and isolation gives it a very Euro-Mediterranean-light feel.
Few full sized cars are allowed on the island and most people get around Avalon by walking or with the many golf cart or similar sizes vehicles that are synonymous with the island.
Gleaning a little history from wikipedia, Avalon really didn't come into its own until William Wrigley, Jr, gained controlling interest in the island in 1919 and invested a lot of money in buildings,
infrastructure, and promotion of the island as a resort. He was reportedly responsible for the building of Catalina's famous
Casino and brought the Chicago Cubs to the island for Spring training. A memorial and garden in his name remains in Avalon.
I visited Avalon once before on a cruise, but, I didn't see much at that time, so, for my one year anniversary in September, we took the
ferry from Long Beach and spent three days there. It is truly a unique place.

The Catalina Casino, now a history museum and movie theatre.

Avalon Harbor

Our home for three days

Crescent Avenue, the main waterfront street, this part is pedestrian only

A great place for breakfast!

Local motorized transit

The front of the casino. We did not, unfortunately, take a tour inside.

Walking towards Descanso Beach

The beach, while accessible, is very rocky which is more typical of what I am used to in Northern California.

The stairs are public, but, this house had its own funicular from the street

In this neighborhood, we encountered a very friendly, wealthy looking woman walking with a glass of wine in hand. Clearly inebriated, she praised us for climbing the stairs up to her neighborhood and welcomed us to Avalon...such is the lifestyles of the rich!

Wrigley's old clock tower

Avalon Harbor

The road to the Catalina airport (10 miles) and Two Harbors (18 miles)

The Wrigley Memorial, about a mile and half from Avalon Harbor

Towards Avalon with the California coastline barely visible in the distance

From here, we hiked up the graded, dirt Avalon Canyon Road to the ridge to get even better views of Catalina

Those mountains in the distance, some 20 miles away, are on the California coastline and, if my geography isn't off, would be Orange County

Along the ridge line

Looking west towards San Clemente Island

A peak on San Clemente Island, which is about 50 miles from the California coast, breaking through the fog.

Looking back east towards the California mainland

Back to Avalon

Avalon is a city proper and, though most of the buildings seem to serve as vacation homes or businesses to support the tourism industry, there are still schools, a medical center, city hall, courthouse, library, fire station, etc.

The medical center

Avalon's K-12 school

City Hall

Fire Services

The Courthouse. I don't know if it is true, but, I remember on my cruise a tour guide stating an LA County judge comes from the mainland once a month or once a week to hear cases.

Library and Sheriff's office

Of course the golf course

It is hard to tell where the vacation homes end and the permanent residences begin

More local transit

This was our vote for the best "car" on the island

Parking problems are everywhere...

Von's...our local grocer!

On our last day a small rain storm hit

Going to Lover's Cove, fun for snorkeling

Taking the ferry to Long Beach

Wow you did an excellent job in presenting Avalon/Catalina Island. This is the most I've ever seen anyone capture of this island on SSP. I have to say I'm really embarrassed being a native Angeleno and the fact I live 4-5 blocks away from where I could easily take the Catalina Express over and yet never visit.

Well thanks for inspiring me because for sure I have to visit next year, and the fact my wife keeps bugging me she want to check it as well.

You photos are so beautiful, thanks for sharing.

We've talked about going for years, but have never managed to make it out there.

Avalon reminds me a bit of Capri (without the hilltop uber resorts and shopping).

Apparently back in the day the Casino was quite the place to have a Hollywood premiere.

Great photos and I love the shots from the ridgeline back over the island.

Great pics, great thread. I have always wanted to go there, but after seeing your pics, I think I would like to move there.
So, why do people on the mainland have to drive giant gas guzzling vehicles, why can't we all drive small electric vehicles like they do?

Wow. This is one of those few and far in between times where the word "beautiful" is grossly inadequate.

This is one of the best threads I've seen on this site. Thanks for posting this.

Ah, Catalina! The last time I was there was in 1999; my partner and I even stayed at the same hotel you did.

On top of being a cute place, what I also liked about Avalon was that there wasn't a chain business or franchise anywhere to be seen. From your very cool pictures, it looks like that's still the case.

Thanks for all the comments! I encourage anyone, if they can, to visit.

Just this past weekend I walked with a friend of mine over the Golden Gate Bridge and, despite growing up and living in the Bay Area for 25 years, this was his first time walking across the bridge. I think we tend to take the things closest to us for granted. So, definitely, curry some favor with your wife and visit

I agree with you. It was so nice spending three days in an actual city and not needing a car for anything. And even though lots of tourists were driving the golf carts, they were rarely intrusive. If only...

Funny you stayed there too. It was a great hotel considering it is a block from the waterfront and comparatively inexpensive ($300 for three weekend nights). Yes, Von's is as chain as it gets, and even the layout of that store reminded me more of the look of small grocers in SF. An there were so many different, local restaurants to eat at, we didn't have enough meals to enjoy them all.

Ugh...yes, this is an eyesore. Thankfully these are tucked away from the main part of the city, but, they are there nonetheless.

Question: is there any agriculture on Catalina?

If they had some olive groves, vineyards, lavender fields, etc., then it would look really nice and Mediterranean.

Very nice pictures of Avalon, stepper77!

Avalon looks like a mediterranean town, of course.

Very nice landscape, bay and streets there. I like the casino building. The views from those hills or mountains are amazing. Very nice colours.

Some pictures, from far, remind me to the andalusian coast in Spain.

Congratulations from Madrid, Spain!

I could be wrong, but, I don't think there is much agriculture on the island. For one, it is pretty mountainous with steep canyons. And, two, the majority of the island is owned by a non-profit, Catalina Island Conservancy, whose primary focus is maintaining a balance of access for recreation purposes and ensuring protection of the native species on the island. Just to hike to the peak, we had to go to the Conservancy's main office to get a permit (which was free), so, I think they limit access to preserve the natural landscape.

Got it.

The steep mountains don't matter (see Europe), but if it's all owned by a conservancy then yes you probably can't do anything.
